Hello
I need a new battery and Audi wanted £424 to fit one which I declined as I thought I could replace it myself.
1. Can I simply just replace the battery without causing any issues?
2. Can anyone recommend where to source the battery?
2014 A4 2.0 TDi S-Line

£424 was probably including the battery price
I recently changed my battery on my A4 2015 2.0 TDI S-Line Black Edition.
Old battery was VARTA with Audi logo so I bought same spec VARTA battery from Euro Car Parts with discount only £200.99 and 5 years warranty (you can check when battery was produced - new one was built at end of 2019).
I fitted it myself and surprise, I didn’t need adaptation, but some models/years need so I was prepared to do it if needed.

Yeah £424 included the battery!

I read that the new battery needs coding?

Really! I've found the correct battery for around £100 which is a potential saving of £2-300 if DIY is possible.

Send me some pics of your car battery so that I can see all it’s written on it and I can point you where to buy new from at good price - don’t buy cheap it’s not worth it long term.
Coding/adaptation might be needed.

That wasn't a cheap battery; it was an exact OEM replacement, just without the dealer pricing.

Buying a battery that you can look at before paying or right after it’s important as you can check what year was the battery built/produced in. BOSCH and VARTA have a code on them that will tell you that.
I thought to buy from eBay at first but was sceptical and it’s F heavy to start back and forth delivery if any and I wanted to see what I am buying.
Knowing that and I still ended up returning and requesting another one as I noticed when I got home that the + and - poles were scratched and rusty which meant for me that it was used. When ECP replaced they brought me one wit about 4 months newer.

I learned my lesson of buying cheap car battery a long time ago when I bought a LION car battery and ended up in replacing it in warranty in less than a year and sold it cheaper on eBay as brand new then got my self something a little more expensive back then but with more than 1 year warranty

I believe coding is only required to tell the car that the battery is new, otherwise it still thinks the old one is in there and treats it accordingly (so I'm guessing your stop/start still wouldn't work until the car knows the battery can deal with it).

I picked up a stop/start battery for my Countryman mk1 for around £100 from Green Flag (same Varta one that Mini do without the logo on) and got my indy to fit it as you have to take trim off etc on that car but on A4 (assuming it's the same as my S4) you have easy access to it in the boot :)

I changed mine myself without coding. The old one went flat every week last winter. I put the new one in with zero problems, it seemed to adjust automatically. I got mine from euro car parts, just make sure it’s the right version.

Which brand of battery did you use, and were the Ah CCA ratings the same as the old battery? thanks

found this out for you .. if you have any problems which I shouldn't think you would ,then look on youtube for recoding a car battery ... use a OBD11... which you can buy on amazon or ebay ...

It’s a Bosch S4, yes it had the same ratings. I got it from eurocarparts. Look for coupons, they often have a sale on.

ECP discounts, aye, same old same old, I'd rather save a lot more and buy from Tanyna as they will be moving a lot of batteries quickly so stock turn over will be high.
Okay I use ECP for some parts, and I probably paid as much or more at ECP the other day for a brake wear lead - but I could not be a'd dealing with my local Audi dealer when I knew ECP had them in stock and when the brake pads eventually need changing, there will be a new lead in the pad kit. Issue was, that lead had been incorrectly manufactured by Audi's supplier, the locking ramp on the pad side of the connector was half formed in reverse, so the plug<>socket sort of locked and could be unlocked without using the normal procedure, while servicing my brakes this year I found that I could not pretend that that plug<>was good!
