I’m replacing my old worn out front brake discs and pads later in the week, weather depending. Can the discs be removed without removing the calliper carrier? They are the 288mm diameter discs

cant remove the discs without removing the carrier. but i second going with 312mm. changed my front discs/pads 2 years ago, in a couple days ill be buying a like new set of discs pads and carriers to convert to 312 off a friend who upgraded to tts brakes.
in hindsight id have done it 2 years ago.

Are the 288mm callipers/carriers compatible with the 312mm discs?

calipers yes, carriers no.
youll need carriers from a car that had 312mm discs, so a mk5/mk6 golf, mk2 tt, mk2 leon, altea, eos etc etc.
also the brake discs obviously. pads are the same, but youll be getting new ones anyway.

Anyone know the carrier bolt size? Is it 17mm?

Did mine tonight.
Current ones are 288mm, changed 2 years/9k miles ago.
'new' 312mm are my friends old ones he changed a year ago, before changing them out 5 months later for tts brakes on his tt.
So they are comparatively similar in terms of wear. All I can say is do it. The 288s have a grabby feel to them that the 312mm don't. It's a much smoother brake from 30mph. Can't comment on motorway speeds etc, as this is based on the 5 mile journey home, but it was worth doing.

288mm before removal (car jacked at this point, car ain't that high!)

It was a 21mm bolt holding on the carrier btw.

Carrier part number from the tt was 3c0615125, but 5n0615125 will also fit.

Hello !

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread.

I'm wondering if the 312mm discs and carrier upgrade would fit under my 16 inch wheels :)

What diameter wheels are these in the photos ?

And do you know the length between the centre line of the axle to the edge of the caliper ?

I can't afford the S3 caliper and TTS rotor upgrade just yet due to needing bigger wheels also.
Many thanks !!

hey, yeah theyll fit under 16" wheels. its a common upgrade on golfs etc and plenty of posts about 16" fitting. the wheels in the photos are 17" and theres plenty of space. dont know the length of the axle to caliper.

2 and a half years later, and still glad i changed to 312mm. changed the car

Oh wow! That's truly awesome :)
Glad to have found such a glowing recommendation xD

Just another quick question:

Are the caliper carriers for the 312mm discs the same as the caliper carriers for the 345mm discs ?

Ive had the thought that if I buy the 345mm calipers and carriers (nobody seems to be selling the carriers separately) I could use my current calipers on those carriers to achieve the 312mm upgrade.
Then when the brakes wear out next time around (by that time I hope to be rolling on some new 18inch wheels) I could simply buy discs and pads for the bigger calipers !!

Of course this plan will only work if the 312mm caliper carriers are indeed the same as the 345mm caliper carriers.... Tbh i don't know how I'd go about checking that

No they’re different. You can use parts catalogues to compare part numbers to see if parts are interchangeable.

brakes last a long time, so personally I’d just go for which ever one you want from the get go. No point buying 312mm discs pads and carriers when you only intend on using them a short while, as they could last the life of the car at this point

Based on 312mm & 345 mm part numbers are different , this is based on my S3 2010 but i assume it will be same on A3

Thank You both so so much.
I really appreciate your time in answering :) I think I'll just refresh my 288mm discs and pads with some decent grabby stuff knowing what I know now ^^

Any recommendations on pad/ disc manufacturers while I've got the attention of now 2 brake gurus ?

@ch1z64 what app is that 0_0 my nerd brain is telling me I need it......

its not an app, its https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/

are your discs lipped? if not, and theyre servicable id just change the pads. honestly wouldnt spend the money on 288 discs as you could just go 312 for the extra cost of the carriers and its worth the cost.
for pads, go with genuine, brembo, ate, trw, textar. doesnt really matter who you go with as long as theyre a 'known' brand as ece r90 means that theyll all work about the same.
