Hi guys
Unfortunately I’m in abit of a bad situation, yesterday I got in the car and after only a mile the low pressure oil light came on and the car sounded awe full straight away, I pulled in and turned it off right away and got towed home.
Had my mechanic come out to have a little look and we started it up no light came back on then after 30 seconds it came on and the car sounded rough again!

So what I’m asking is this the end or can this be fixed at a reasonable price?
I have been looking online and most seem to go straight into worse case scenario but with no real story of how it ended?
The garage is going to pick it up this week but I’m going out of my mind thinking what it could be?

This happened to me. Luckily, and I use that word loosely, I only lost my turbo, oil pick up and a few other little bits. The car has been repaired at a cost of close to £1300 but i had AA cover that pays £500 to the cost.

The garage told me i was very lucky and it could of been a rebuild at worst case. I had the work done and was told to hope for the best that there was no damage further into the engine when the new parts were put on.

I’ve had the repair done for a while no and I’ve had no trouble. It had a new shaft as the old one had worn away causing the initial breakdown.

Other people may have better experiences but this is mine and I hope it helps

What engine is it? Can be various things. Some are lucky with a cheap fix.

Same as mine.

Could be a blocked pickup pie. Or pump/balance shaft. The big money is if its caused collateral damage and anything has ran dry.

Personally I'd Pay for the sump to be dropped and go from there.

I hope it hasn’t done any major damage the mechanic had a look through the oil filler and said it looked ok in there from what he can see but who knows I’m hoping it is a pump or something like that!
Just as I’ve got the car to how I want it as well

You won't really know until you try and fix it. Mines run fine but whilst its in for a load of work. Having the balance shaft delete and some other bits done for peace of mind.

Just had a call from the mechanic who just said that it’s such a big job that he thinks it’s not worth it
So will give a vw/Audi specialist a ring tomorrow and see what they recommend?
Surely this is fixable??

Dropping the sumps not a big job. I'd be reluctant to use someone that thinks thats a big job. Find a specialist. Where are you located?

I’m in Devon so going to hopefully use a company called performance driven in Taunton I will give them a ring tomorrow and go from there

Really p!$$e$ me off when a mechanic says that "its not worth it" who are they to say that it is worth it or not! Not everything people do is based on value of the car, do yourself a favour and take the car off him.

A mechanic who claims "it's not worth it" or "it needs replaced" is usually code for "I don't know how to fix it".

This is especially true when it comes to engines and gearboxes.

Yeah I think mine sound like top end I reckon but who knows it’s booked in now but can’t fit me in till the end of September so it’s going to be a long wait to find out

thats **** stuart,

back in 2011 my wife rung me to tell me she was making record time on her way home, shortly after she rung me and said the car had stopped. (to be fair it had low oil pressure light twice leading upto this event)

it was 2.0t, when i stripped it the oil pickup had alot of cover of small black hard shards ( i believe these were gasket material from the rocker cover), i believe this i common, it lead to low oil pressure and the tensioner on the chain at the back on the head that drives the other cam lost pressure and the chain ceased stripping teeth on the cambelt ******* the enigine,

even back then engines were hard to find but i managed to get a 2.0t from an a3 and just replaced the whole lump if memory serves correct it was around £750 in 2011 surely now you can get a whole lump much cheaper and just replace.

i managed to sell the block and head damaged and got over £400 back!

UPDATE!!!

So a few days ago I had the phone call from the garage! Apparently I’m a very lucky man they took of the sump and no shards of metal where found, the crank and whatever else is in the engine looked fine with no scoring or damage (he did say but but I’m crap at remembering what he said exactly) so it was something to do with oil pump bearings going and the chain?? So having it all fixed with a new oil pump belt tensioner and water pump which is gunna put me £1800 out of pocket but I really don’t care just glad it’s getting fixed and will soon be coming home

Good news chap and another b7 that lives another day:thumbs up::yes:

What's a '56 plate 2.0t worth these days? £1800 is a lot of money for repairs.

Not worth much to be honest , £4k on average but it's not allways about monitory resale value, it's worth is to the owner.

A nice example is still a lot of car for £4k :thumbs up:

That's one point of view. But you'd not replace it for anything better that's had a fresh belt for £1800.

Very true Rob.
I'm more than happy with my 2.0tdi and I couldn't change her to anything better for similar money.
I've spent out a lot on mine recently, but luckily it was for upgrades/preventative measures rather than repairs.

we buy any wagon + a few pounds on top and you'll be very close to £4k for a good bus.

they quoted me £1295? 120k 3 owners full service history, the insurance rang today offered me £2500 which obviously i declined although that's a decent offer on an old car compared to the trade in value and buying sites mental quotes, think the avants go for a good £500 more on average but id say a realistic price is around the £3-3.5 mark for a nice saloon nowadays with average miles.

Do you know any car dealers?

Get one to "list" a similar spec car to your at the price you want. And send the ad to the insurance co using it as evidence

I have sent them an email with a few already so hopefully not long now.

Maybe but I wouldn’t get anything near as nice without forking out a lot more than 1800, I did have a budget I was gunna spend on it and as it was under that why the hell not
