Hi All,
The other half came home from work yesterday (in the heat!.. typical) and was complaining that the internal heater/ac fans weren't blowing.

I had a look & the control panel part is working fine, can turn the fan up & down, click the auto, move the vents & you can hear the flaps moving to the locations etc...
But, nothing from the vents at all, no matter what ones I try. And you can hear no noise from the motor at all.
It was working perfectly until now & had no dodgy noises indicating a motor was on it's way out or anything?

Is this likely to be the motor all of a sudden just dying? or are there controllers or anything that maybe not sending the signal to the motor?

I've tried giving the motor a tap from underneath & got no sign of life & checked the fuses (it's never simply a fuse is it!)

Any help/ideas on things to try will be greatly appreciated before taking to be looked at.
the car is a 2011 a3 2.0tdi
Cheers

Yes the brushes get stuck can remove the glovebox and (whilst keys out of ignition) spin the fan, through the flap. A new one is only about £60

If it's dead which does happen, I have one available, just need to confirm yours matches.

I replaced mine as it was making a little whispery noise, only to find out it was a stupid leaf stuck in the air duct, not the fan unit, lol.

Ok nice one,
So removing the glovebox, I'd likely be faced with a fan that doesn't spin if stuck? and I could force it to turn to free it up to confirm it's duff/on it's way out. before shelling out for a new one?

NHN - thanks for the offer, from what i could see without removing the glovebox the sticker showed:
Valeo F997167J
A5 P NV 1K2820015G

if any of that helps
pm me how much you're after if it looks like the right one & you want it out of your way
Cheers

Yes mine seized up about 3 years ago, been fine ever since

oh right ok, worth a shot first up then.
thanks for that, appreciate it!.. just watching a youtube vid on removing the glovebox

Once the glovebox is out, can you then see the fan to move or do you have to remove the motor as well?
only asking as i've just watched a video & with the glovebox removed i couldn't make out access to the fan?
just preparing myself... do i have a look tonight (when we need the car tomorrow) or wait for the weekend lol

Don't disconnect the air bag or you'll need it to be reset with vcds

Well, I've removed the glovebox which was nice and straight forward.

The fan itself does turn but is very stiff.
Anybody know if it should spin nice and freely or not?
It doesn't make any nasty noises or anything. But when I try the fans it doesn't even look like it tries to turn..

No should be free to spin, you'll get a little bit of resistance, but your's does sound knackered

Yeah it will only spin I i push it round as soon as you stop it stops dead.
Just no idea whether it should turn easily and keep moving when I let go if you know what I mean.

Don't want to fork out for one only to find it's something not 'telling it' to spin.
Ecp have a valeo one for £265 and a cheaper EIS brand? For £122.

Might go second hand!

yes it should keep spinning

I've just messaged nhn to see what part number it is.

I take it the eBay ones are just copies? I normally buy the genuine/oe equivalent parts but might chance one if it's that much of a saving.

Part number be the same I bet, the last letter might be different but that's ok. Yeah is a saving

All sorted, needed a new fan as the old one was really hard to turn.
Thanks for all the help to sort this.

Special thanks to @NHN for sorting me out with a fan unit and helping me a few fitting hiccups, with it being a very slightly different part number that involved a slight trimming of plastic to fit the connector.
Once connected it works perfectly just as @NHN assured me it would. Spot on.
