I was working outside on the house yesterday. My car was in the garage with the garage door shut. I then hear a car alarm going, sounds like from next door. It stops for a second then starts again, and keeps repeating that. Muttering under my breath about idiots leaving their window open, I figure I'd better check just in case someone is actually trying to break into next door's car. As I get in front of my garage though I realise the noise is coming from there and it's my car that's annoying everyone!

Unlocking it stops the alarm, and after locking it again it was fine, so what on earth has triggered that? I did have my car keys in my pocket as I was climbing up and down ladders, but as far as I know there is no combination of button presses that actually triggers the alarm (it's a UK car).

Any ideas?

I had this once on my A6. Get it scanned with VCDS. It’ll tell you what set the alarm off. In my case it was a broken rear quarter light. Except it demonstrably wasn’t broken, so was probably a bad connection. It kept happening so eventually I had to leave the car unlocked - fortunately I live in a very low crime area and at work had a monitored car park. I traded it in for a new A4 without getting it fixed

Thanks @rafletcher, I should have thought of VCDS. I've not used it for years but dug out my old cable and I've just scanned it and it was the "rear lid" that triggered the alarm. I wonder if I hadn't properly closed the hatch the night before? Or maybe the switch is on the blink. Anyway at least I know what to check if it ever happens again.

most likely a dodgy switch on its way out. Had a bonnet switch go on my a6 and it did similar things to what you are describing.
If I remember right it’s a tiny micro switch on the boot latch that tells the car it’s closed/open.

If you had the keys in your pocket the boot button probably got pressed whilst up and down the ladders

I did wonder about that and it's quite possible buttons got accidently pressed, but as far as I could find out there is no combination of button presses that would/should set off the alarm.

No but if you've hit the boot button, the boot is then opened and the alarm goes off but not straight away - Done it myself - locked the car put keys in my pocket and shut the garage door, bent down to pick up a box i'd put down and must have flipped the boot because alarm went off about 2 hours later and the boot was open

I had the same problem with a TTRS. In the end AUDI diagnosed corroded leads on the alarm siren. They replaced the leads - end of the problem. I hope you get it sorted
