Looking at the new A5 Sportback here in Dublin. Unlike, the UK the MMI Navigation Plus does not come as standard. It's an option at €3.5K which is pretty expensive. There is no difference in screen sizes etc if you don't pick it. The Virtual cockpit is then another €500+ option which you can spec without the MMI plus system.

Is the MMI Nav Plus a must-have option for those using it? I use Waze and Google Maps via carplay in my current E class saloon. I know you get the cool Google satellite maps in MMI plus, but is there anything there that would make the system a necessary option? You can actually buy it after you take delivery, it comes prepped as standard.

3.5k just for the activation is expensive tbh, I get it's subsidised initially, but that's a bitter pill.

I agree with NHN, especially when across the border it is standard kit. Why not look at buying and importing from the north and get the latest incarnation of the MMI system.

I have it in my 2020MY A5 sportback S-Line facelift. The maps and graphics and speed it far superior to my 2018MY A5 Sportback S-Line and the full virtual cockpit is ace; however not for the price you say they are available for as options.

We follow the German model here sadly. Which is you start with a literally bare bones model and then build it up from there. So everything is a ****** option. And because car tax is so expensive here, every option is expensive. I'd much rather the UK system where you have high spec'ed cars as the base model and you can simply go up to a Vorsprung edition for everything.

The other issue here is it makes the A6 look very attractive as the MMI plus system with VC is €2.2K which is way cheaper. A like for like spec here has the A6 the same price if not a tad cheaper than the A5 similar spec/engine.
