Hey guys,

My car seems to be jerky/clonky/harsh seeming on the automatic gear changes.

This tends to happen when first driving the car and calms down after a bit of driving. I particularly noticed it getting quite harsh whenever I put the foot down.

I'm quite a car noob tbh, are these cars known for needing to warm up before driving and maybe that's the reason?

On another note I've just realised after popping my bonnet tonight that my engine cover is broken and cracked in half. This definitely wasn't like this when I bought it a year ago so I'm assuming the guys I took it to get serviced done this around 7 months ago. Should this be a priority in changing?

On another note, I got my air con serviced/regassed around 10 months ago after purchasing the car and noticed its not working when we got a spell of good weather.. Paid 60 to get it done as well by kwik fit. Is this a common issue in the car?

Thanks and sorry about the long message.

Air con: Get it properly leak tested (as opposed to just pressure tested). You do keep it on all the time don’t you? Keeps the compressor bearings lubricated.

Egine cover: Purely cosmetic.

Gearbox: How many miles has the car done? S-Tronic needs a service at 38,000 miles.

Yes ensure the gearbox fluids have been changed and serviced.
Its quite a cheap job, my guy does it less than £50.00

Has the battery been changed since the car was new? I have a 2014 1.8q that was very jerky until I had the battery changed for the first time after it died. It’s a completely different car now and I’m sure someone on the forum more technical than me can explain why new battery improved the smoothness of gear changes..

Every car needs to be warmed up prior to heavy use... And the opposite prior to switching off, needs to be cooled down

Gearbox calibration may help as when done correctly all the kiss / pressure points are readapted to account for wear. Need a dealership or authorised 3rd party to complete this for you.... like me :)

I don't keep the air con on really. Should I be doing this? I'll maybe get this test done soon then. The car has just hit 60k miles and all services up until 40k where done in the audi dealership. I brought it to a fella who's a vag com specialist 7 months ago and he said nothing needed done to the car and I asked him to check the service book incase it's missed any reccomended changes as well.

Hi pal, thanks for your reply. I don't think the battery has ever been changed its definitely something that I could look into. Can anybody experienced shed any light on this? Thanks!

Thats not bad at all, I think it was changed at 38k I'll double check the service book tomorrow. Its just hit 60k miles so may be in need of it soon. Thanks for your feedback

Yes, keep it on all the time. If you leave it off over winter the compressor seals can dry out and seize, then when you come to start it up in summer the drive shears, meaning new compressor.

doesn't have to be on all the time, just remember to have it on every once in a while...
