Cleaning a headlining

I'm working on my old A4 at the moment and want to clean the headlining, it's been removed from the car as I needed to do some work on the sunroof. So what would be the best way to clean it, with the only caveat being it's 25 years old so I need to be careful with what I clean it with.
 
I'd be liberally spraying APC on it and using a CLEAN brush slowly work it in. Then dab of the excess liquid with a clean microfibre.

The key would be not too much agitation and keeping the brush clean.

You could rent a rug doctor from your local Tesco depending on how dirty it is. I went halves with someone on it for 2 days, one bottle of detergent was enough to do 2 cars and 2 houses worth of carpet and I still have detergent left. Brilliant things have rented them about 5 times over the years. You will be disgusted by the filth.

I've rented rug doctors before, they are very good but I think it would destroy the 25 year old headliner, and they are no longer available to buy if things go wrong. Think any machine cleaning is out it would have to be done by hand.
 
You think even the hand tool would be too much? You control how aggressive it is with that really.
 
Yer, don't think the foam & glue would withstand a soaking, already had to replace the entire sunroof panel as the foam had disintegrated. That was an eye watering cost and if the headliner gets damaged then the only option would be to have it re-trimmed, and most likely won't be able to find the correct colour & type of fabric.

As said above, I wouldnt get that soaked. You really want to try the driest method possible. It will be a slow process but it will pay off in the end. Not sure how dirty it is but I would even avoid spraying APC onto it, I would spray it onto a cloth or brush, rub lightly and then mop up quickly with a dry MF. The trick here is not to allow the liquid to soak in.

APC and maybe a convertible roof brush. If you get it soaked it'll be ruined.
