Hi guys,

New member, often lurk around here for the car advice and wondered if you could help...

today, I filled up on fuel and as I turned the corner out of the station the oil pressure warning light flicked on, then almost immediately off. I pulled over, turned the engine off and waited 10-15 mins, turned it back over, engine sounded sweet, no rattle, idles at around 800 revs, stood and the next set of lights and it flashed on again, I could hear the engine ticking over very quietly and it sounded sweet, pulled over and waited 20 mins then drove home. It came on again for 50 seconds (I filmed this), then went off without returning for the remaining 5 min drive, due to the heat I couldn’t seem to get the oil cool enough to check oil level. The light seemed to come on when the car was uneven (on an incline or decline or turning into a corner).
Any advice other than “don’t drive it”, any help or experience greatly appreciated; the car is 105k miles deep and a very nice little runner, feel like the heat has a role to play in this!

What colour was the light?
yellow is level
red is oil pressure

Red and flashing. After a bit of reading I’m the oil just heated up to change consistency (not scientific term I appreciate) due to the boiling hot day...

on for 50 seconds (recorded a video of it) then off for the entirety of the journey (a whopping 5 mins)

The ambient temp is not going to exceed the temp inside the engine, so it's unlikely you can blame the weather for an oil light indicator.
You need to check the oil level, especially if it's on/off depending on the incline.
Not driving it IS the best advice UNTIL you check your oil level and top up if needed. Usually if the red oil light comes on, the damage is done so don't tempt fate by driving it until you can confirm it is not below the minimum fill level.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Just as an update for anybody with a similar issue; I took it to my brother and he changed the oil, oil filter and drove it for a good couple of hours. He did comment that the oil was aged, sludgy and nasty causing the oil filter to be covered in it.

I didn’t believe it was the oil pump (and hopefully I’m not talking too soon) because the error was intermittent, happened when I was changing direction into a sharp corner and always (3 times) happened in the same spot in my town when there is a sharp incline with drop.

So right now, I’m fixed, I will ask him which error code was thrown up via the diag machine if anybody is interested,

Thanks again for contributions to this...

D
