Hi all

So the first mod I'd like to do to my car is an auto trunk opener. The car has the standard hydraulic struts fitted to the booth. I did look around and found spring loaded struts available. Is there a way to configure the boot opening button on the remote to physically unlock the booth and open it...

Does the boot 'pop' already? Or not?

If so, then all you should need are the sprung struts I think. Similar to how the saloon ones work. I think the only reason the HB/SB one doesn't open is because it isn't sprung?

no the boot does not pop - the key only unlocks the boot. I do not know if the button can be reprogrammed

Have you tried holding the boot open button on the key fob? It seems to pop it open so you only need to lift it. The number of times my keys have done this in my pocket and when I get in the car to drive somewhere it complains about the boot being open.

I don’t think it’s an option on the sport or hatch backs, would have to be a full custom job.

So. A long press on the boot opening button on the remote actually pops the boot open. Which way should I go? Spring loaded struts or is there a kit one can purchase

Have you seen this?

I’ve been snooping around this option also for my A6 Avant but my only option, apparently is the power tailgate.

Your one, as it’s a smaller car and therefore lighter tailgate, you could look for the Golf mk7 power boot struts, if I remember correctly.
I searched for them en fell in love as it makes half a job off your hands.

No, your key probably will not have the option to open the boot, even slightly. It will probably just unlock it, as comments above say.
Same with mine. From the key fob, I can press button and get the click heard to unlock the latch but not a slight lift will be done. It just open the lock so you do the hard bit and lift the ****** thing up. Lol

Check on the net as there a few companies that fo these spring loaded gas struts that pops it open.
Yeah. i think they called “pop trunk kit”.

All it requires you to do is a simple strut swap and off you go.

The first link loaded with the white A3 looks like done with it where silver one, looks to me as an electric boot. Might be wrong but it seems to be not the same speed/force of opening.
The white one is just “click and pop” to me.

I assume this isn't available on SB due to the weight of the tailgate. Saloon is a completely different story, boot lid is much lighter.

Oh, and one more thing.

If you got your stronger struts in and you press the boot button on the key fob to open the latch, it should still fo the job and lift the tailgate fully up.
No need for any key programming, just the same longer key press to release/unlock the latch.

They both use the same gas struts: Stabilus 1820BB (495N)

The silver uses a spring to pop the boot open: R204305 https://www.assocspring.co.uk/iso-medium-duty/R204305
The white uses a Scirocco buffer: 1K8 827 761D http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-V...top-Buffer-Early-Ver-1K8827761D-/302343711235

Note that the silver is a 5-door and the white is a 3 door, so the buffers may not work with the 5 door as discussed in the comments of the video: "The sportback has a different strut, length 556 mm, stroke 224 mm and 450 Newton. The 3-doors has 544 mm, stroke 216 and 460 Newton."

5-door 450N oem part no.: 8V4827552
3-door 460N oem part no.: 8V3827552

I did commented on the yt vide with few questions.
Do you know @Lehn if any of the above would work with heavier A6 Avant tailgate?

I've no idea to be honest. The tricky part is to get the right spring with the right force to pop the boot open and make the struts take over. However, if you insert a too strong strut or spring you may risk damaging something. When I was on the BabyBmw forum someone talked about a strut pierce through a rear window or something like that :whistle2:

I can already tell that in a few months we'll have threads named "My tailgate hit the garage ceiling!" and such. :D

Didn’t knew he will be here @Lehn.
Even better as he could possible explain further if more questions arise.

Lets hope it will not happen, @Rideen. Lol

Does this still work?
Any guys with the A3 8v Sportback who use those added springs to 'pop' the tailgate open?
Does it also work in winter (when compressed gas works different)?
No damage to the boot after long-time usage?

Hope to hear some experiences from forum members who use this and tried it for several months and in winter seasons.

YouTube on how to fit (8p but same) :

The full electric kit would be the 'best', but also pricey... Around 400 euros...
I'm familiar with the full electric boot (o.e.m.), from my Audi A4 at work. Works excellent.

But at this point I want to try the springs on the original struts. But only if they work in the long run. Winter Temps. Etc.
Any experiences?

I fitted the replacement struts to my TCR to open the boot automatically, works very well. The only slight issue is that it’s a bit harder to close the boot.

I couldn’t seem to get them in the UK, ended up ordering from a company in the USA.

Wife would love this on her S3 saloon....would get me brownie points as well ! :friends:

My S3 saloon did this from factory, you just held the boot release button down on the remote and it opened. It wasn’t powered so you still had to close it by hand.

Yep... Saloons always do that, but unfortunately not the Sportback.

£319 on the link I posed above :)

Very tempted to get it, but not sure how well all that wiring and hardware fits behind panels, and you just never know what you are getting by way of instructions on Aliexpress.

The sprung shocks seem a good (cheap) idea, but it has been said they put stress on the strut mounting points....

Having had an A4 with electric tailgate, the most used functionality was opening it when returning with a trolley load of shopping, using the remote. Sadly the aftermarket kits don’t have that.

So first link is struts + springs.
Second link doesn't work.

Do I need struts and springs, or can I only buy the springs and place them on my o.e.m. struts?

I think, if u remove top mounts (clips) you will be able to insert springs and put mounts back I presume they do the same thing ..

Doesn't work ? it works for me . what PC and browser you using? try this? : https://www.assocspring.co.uk/iso-light-duty.html

After having my "pop boot" springs/struts fitted, noticed that, there isn't anything to open it from inside of the cab.
While you're sitting behind the wheel relaxed and waiting for your missus to load up the shopping, there is no button to release the boot.

I am actually in the process of fitting one myself in the drivers door card pocket.
Simple boot release button hooked up to boot release handle switch and wired all the way from the tailgate to front door.
Red lit up button will do nicely in there

@KrisKrk how are your experiences? What springs did you use? And how does the pop work in cold winter times?

About wanting to open the boot while sitting in the A3: can't you press the middle button on the remote? It works if you turn the engine off/unlock the doors....

Is it not much easier just to take the key out from ignition and press the button???

My FL 8V has a boot lock release button on the key. ETA X-post with Pete. And as I have “keyless” it’s easy.
