Hi!

Let's get to the case. My wife has had a problem with her A3 1.9TDI. After filling half of the tank and driving some time, the distance to empty was quite accurate - about 500km. She had stopped for lunch, then went back to the car, launched it and then some kind of "esp thingy" showed up. Next thing you know - the "distance to empty" meter showed only 250km. Sure, you can ignore it, but hey, try to explain it for her.
What could be the fault?

Mines is similar 2.0tdi had half tank was parked up cleaning it playing music with ignition on. Had 265miles in tank set off had 180miles ?

It’s a calculated value based on how you drive the car. If you take it on the motorway you’ll see the distance to empty increase. Launch and drive hard it you’d expect it to decrease.

Yes, it is. But the problem here is that the car was driven as always, just trough the city, with nothing changed. The distance to empty was the same as it would be with ¼ of a tank. But normally it is not like that.

It’ll sort itself out over a week, as long as the fuel gauge is reading ok.
