Hi, does anyone have experience of bike racks for the avant ?

- ie what is better generally rear or roof mounted for up to 2 bikes (I know a lot will depend on brand ‘ price , quality)
If it’s roof I’ll need to factor in roof rack bars , which I assume I can fit without any extra bits on an avant .

Only going to be used a few times a year for 200 mile trips but may do a Scotland to mid / south France as well.

Just been discussing this with herts S3 . Roof bars are the strongest and most stable method, I have OEM audi roof bars and thule carriers that use T slot connection never had an issue. Also carry a pair on the back using Saris 3 bike carrier although prefer only two on the back otherwise feels slightly unsafe and obscures plate. Again never had a problem am in Norfolk now just done 200 miles with four on board.

The tow bar mounted ones are far more fuel efficient as the bikes are in the draught of the car.

I have a 3 bike rack and if it is fully loaded or only has a single bike on, it is solid as a rock. I have done 100+mph on the Autobahn, obviously where it permits and it hasn’t budged at all, no vibration, no whistling, or oscillation or anything.

Thanks good to know , also I don’t think you’d get roof bikes on the Chunnel train , maybe the ferry ?
Does see a bit safer and tidier if done right on the rear ...

I just got the B'Twin 320 3 bike high rear carrier from Decathlon, I can recommend it if you want an inexpensive, no frills carrier. Doesn't lock to the car nor can you lock bikes to it. Folds almost flat so easy to store when not in use. Says to drive up to 70 mph so no speeding on motorway!
Decided to go roof route as doesn't restrict the boot use and doesn't block view etc. Also roof rack and carriers all lock which is safer.

You can get roof racks on the Chunnel, you have to let them know and they put you with the vans as opposed to the cars as there is a taller height restriction (van bit is not double decker)

I currently have a tow bar mounted rack and I prefer it to my old rear mounted one.

It is much more secure on the back, and I never liked wrenching on the rear one as the straps come over the rear boot spolier, never wanted to break it. Plus most tow bar ones have a light set, so no cords, swinging lights or blocked plates with it :icon thumright:

My only complaint is, because I have a non-factory towbar without the prep, the parking sensors in the rear do not switch off and I have to use the button everytime I put it in reverse
