We've touched on this before recently, I have emailed Saris support to ask whether their rear carriers are suitable for the Avant as Halfords are pretty vague ('may' be suitable for your vehicle!!).

Will keep you updated.

If anyone reads this and can confirm either way whether the Bones 2/3 fit, that would be useful; I contacted Saris a while ago when I had the S3 and never got a reply!

Aah OK, I'd like to know if anyone has successfully put a rear mounted carrier on the car without the spoiler popping off! My car may have had one as I can see a few scratches on the rear hatch lip

I wrote to Raleigh (official UK distributors of Saris) and they confirmed that any carriers listed on the Saris for the A4 Avant will work on the S4 :)

Went for the Btwin 320 3 bike carrier from Decathlon which arrives later today, their site says the 300 and 320 are both compatible with B8/B8.5

Got the 320 on today, pic attached - ignore the handlebar facing inwards, only put the bike on to adjust the holders

Is it just me or the angle of the picture, but there's quite an over-hang of the bike on the near-side producing?

I'll be honest, never been a fan of rear tailgate carriers. Straps, contact with paint, poor visibility? I run an Allroad with roof mounted Thule system. Okay it whistles, but that's the deal if you have a roof rack or carry a bike.

You are correct, it's because my top tube is slightly angled. I've since got a couple of false top tubes which will solve that problem or I could remove a wheel (or even both as they're quick release).
I've actually just sourced the right feet and fitting kit for my Audi (Thule) roof bars from my previous car so may put my bike on the roof (got one cycle carrier for the bars) and rest of the family's ones on the rear carrier.

Saris fits fine used one on my Mercedes estate aswell for years. Very well made and solid when at speed. Yours looks fine.

Saris look very solid but don't you need a lighting board as they obstruct the reg plate?

That looks like what I'm aiming for, just got the feet and fitting kit so I can reuse the Aero Bars from the Audi bar kit I had for my S3.
My daughter's bike is exactly the width of the arms on the rear rack so that'll have to go on the roof (20" wheels) and my younger ones will have to go in the boot as it's too small for roof or rear rack (16" wheels with no top tube and too short for a false one)

Oh, annoying as that's the main reason why I went for the Decathlon one rather than Saris as I thought you had to have a lighting board, plus it's a lot more expensive to begin with

Made it on first journey with the carrier, also realised the Audi bars can’t be reused as the legs I got are different and the bars only have holes rather a long groove like the Thule branded ones so I need some bars now too! Doh

At least I figured out that I can get the 'old' style 961 bars for £63 new and delivered, the new Aero style is £85+
