Hi all,

Newbie here. Have just bought a 2003 S3, and I must say, love it so far. However I've never driven a standard one, and I know it's been slightly modded as there was a ****** dump valve fitted (which I have removed) and a non-standard exhaust which is too loud (still there for now). But is there any way I can tell if it's had a re-map, without actually taking it somewhere and paying someone to find out?

Power properly kicks in around 3,500. Between 2-3000 it's all exhaust drone and very little to play with. Is that normal and just to be expected with an aftermarket exhaust, or do I have something that's been messed around with ECU wise as well?

Secondary question: there are spacers on the rear wheels, which admittedly look good (very nice stance). But do they affect anything worth being concerned about?

PS. I am well aware of the perils of buying randomly modded cars. But when I saw it and drove it, I just really, really wanted an S3 vs the kind of newer, more reliable yet ultimately more boring Golf GTi I could have had for the same money.

PPS. Apologies if these things have been covered in long forgotten threads, but have had a decent search and come up with very little.

Thank you!

I’ve driven both and the best way I can describe it, is if the car is standard, power delivery is super smooth. If you feel the turbo/power kick in around 3000rpm then it will have had a remap.

Welcome to the club. Pics please or we won’t answer any more of your questions :p

If its got a dump valve and aftermarket exhaust it most likely has been remapped too. Does it have a boost gauge?

Probably lack of back pressure , changing the power delivery, the 24v tuners , fitted 'loud exhaust's' and found the mpg dropped to under 20's with little improvement , the ex cam was ground to have back pressure, with out it, most of the charge went out the ex port .. swap the cams , then yes , things happened ..

id of thought the low power under 2000 was to be expected as its small short stroke engine , hence the close ratio box etc ?

It is fun, but definitely not "super smooth". I think you've probably answered my main question...

A pic for your trouble.

No boost gauge I'm afraid, so kinda flying blind in that respect. All I can tell you is how it feels in certain gears / revs.
