After owning lots of VW / Audi's with the 1.8T variant engine I fancy a change and am thinking about buying an A4 Cab with the 3.0 V6 engine..
I would love to hear some feedback from people who have lived with this engine for a while. How does it sound, perform and effect the wallet?

They're nice engines, silky smooth and a very linear power delivery meaning there's no massive spike in power like there is with the 1.8T's.

Performance wise they don't set the road on fire, but are fairly brisk (if you avoid the auto) and have decent acceleration throughout the rev range. They sound a million times better than 1.8T's obviously being a V6, and have a bit of a throaty exhaust note at high revs.

Running costs are slightly higher, but MPG in the high 20's can easily be achieved. I'd say take one for a test drive because an NA engine is not to everyone's liking.

What he said!....
And I'd repeat the comment about the auto boxs' as the multitronic box can be fragile and then VERY expensive to fix if they do go wrong!
You'll lose some performance too with the auto box.
Manual is a a 6.9sec 0-60 and its a 152mph car so its not a Subaru Impreza as far as performance is concerned....but its a LOT more refined and doesn't suffer from the Colin Macrae wannabe image.
Get it remapped, then its a more snarling beast with about 240bhp and 230ft/lb torque...
Like all large engine performance cars it needs looking after, service wise, so do the maths and for smiles/noise per buck, so to speak, it knocks sock off the 1.8T.
Lets not forget that the 3.0 block is the same block Audi now use for the new S4 but with a Supercharger, so it'll take lots of power, i.e they are bullet proof!
Just don't expect 30mpg everywhere...I know it'll do it on a long motorway drive, but would you drive at 56mph everywhere in a 3.0 Audi v6?
Nah...me neither....assume 23mpg around town and about 27-29mpg on the motorway.

Ditto!
Love mine to bits, had no major problems (touch wood),also seeing peoples faces when they see the 3.0 badge! They either want to race you or back well off and give up! Hee Hee!:kissmyrings:

Been on the 1.8T or 3.0 dilemma for a few months now.

Must of changed my mind every week on which to buy. Think i've finally decided 3.0 is the way to go (for me anyway)

I'd go for the 3.0. But please avoid the auto, I was very dissapointed after a year of ownership. I suppose I was blinkered by going from a family mobile to the V6, (had a VR6 a couple of years back so thought V6 meant sporty). If you like a manual stick to them. Doesn't the auto box add about 1.5s to 60?

Then again got an S4 now which seems to have a awkward manual box!

Cheers

Been a bit hasty here, if you are looking for a great cruiser its really good and auto if you like it a bonus, for years I've had sporty VAG cars and if thats what you are looking for the auto didn't do it for me.

I'm just getting so board of changing gear and now find myself driving round half the time in the wrong gear as I can't be assed to change... What a difference to all those young years of looking for any excuse to change gear! I've just got this worry that after a few weeks of Auto I will hate it!

But isn't 3.0L V6 cab ownership all about cruising and laid back driving...

That is what happened to me, parents have run autos for years, jags etc (they're not rich they've usually passed their best when they get them). Great to get a shot of for a few days and then give back. Not my cup o tea for every day use (as i found out), each to their own tho. Lost a fair bit of money on my 3.0 in a year, and I mean fair, but to go back to a quick, manual car was worth it.

Speaking of this car engine, how common is it for the automatic transmission to fail, and approx. at what mileage?
I have fetched a pretty good deal on a 2003 A4 quattro with this one sitting on, but it's AT.
Should I look elsewhere, trying to find something with a manual, considering the age of the car?

I see your dilemma ideally you don’t want a manual but everyones saying the autos are slow and generally a bit $h!t but you fancy a v6, look at it this way if you want it for cruising around with some overtaking power and a nice soundtrack then get the auto if you want something for performance then avoid it apart from a remap where it still wont set the world on fire its a money pit to make fast.

I had a tiptronic auto mercedes before yeah the box annoyed me at times but it was also really handy and i wouldn't of went with a manual in an e class if i had the choice as it was a cruiser sit back relax and put your foot down, so its down to the car and what your intentions are tbh, if its cruisin then get the auto and enjoy the v6 sound just don’t expect it to pull the skin off a rice pudding :)

The Quattro uses the tiptronic 'box and pretty reliable. I wouldn't be worried at all buying one of those.

I have a FWD 3.0i Cab sat here with CVT and that is throwing errors, used to be a new gearbox and tcu module costing thousands to sort, however, now you can buy refurbed TCUs for £250 or get yours refurbed for £130, so even they are not such an issue any more.
