1.8TFSI and 2.0TFSI S3 : Metallic Rustle/Rattle between 1500-3000 rpm

He said as soon as he saw the actuator move it started to rattle.

This is my take on it/the design.

If the wastegate flap/penny is anything like other turbo and the same as a TD05-18G subaru turbo I have rebuilt, the penny is actually floating/loose on the end of the armateur and not hard mounted/welded.

On an older actuator system the diaphragm pushes the rod outwards opening the wastegate. But it requires several psi of pressure to start doing this. By the time the car generates that pressure any noise generated by the flap rattling is lost in other ambient noises. Or no rattle against its seating position occurs as it moves from rest to open in a faster motion.

The motor driven actuator obviously starts opening the flap slightly/very early in the boost generation process. Hence there is a small window where the penny rattles either against its rest point due to tension being released or as it opens and can be heard due to the low rpm having lower ambient noise levels.

So does this mean it could be fixed by a software update to trigger the actuator slightly later (after a bit more pressure had built up)?

Maybe....
It will be interesting to see if mine still does it when I fit the Burger Sport JB1 tuning module. As this tricks the boost parameter. So the ecu may not open the actuator quite so early.

I had planned to stick the Gopro in there to get a recording, but that backfired today due to miserable weather.

Just to let you all know my car was at the dealers last week and there was a tech bulletin for the turbocharger. When I asked what was being done they told me they were making an adjustment to the waste gate on my turbo.. Wish I asked now whether it was to eliminate this issue! When I first brought my car I did have this issue, then I stopped paying attention (and caring) plus with an aftermarket exhaust its made it more difficult to hear (if at all) so was never an issue after that.
Paperwork of the Work done on the car will be coming through the post so if theres a bulletin service fix number I will be sure to post it up!

Did you ever find out what the tech bulletin from Audi for the turbo was?

Just bought a 2014 1.8 TFSI Quattro and definitely have this annoying rattle.

Had the dealership check it and all they came back with was 'no technical solution from Audi'.

Hm.

They did renew part of the cooling system to (hopefully) get rid of some black flakes of something or other in there, under warranty, though.

With this plus a slightly lumpy downshift in Manual mode on the S-tronic, Vorsprung Durch Technik is beggining to seem a little ironic

Just returned to Audi ownership in the last week or so, and so back on the forum. Only noticing it now but I think I have this on my S3 (PFL), and now something I can't unhear. Has anyone managed to get a fix from Audi.

Do the clips that are available (Part 06J 145 220 A, by the looks of it) sort the issue? Is this something Audi have provided as a fix?

Cheers

Forum newbie here. Just browsing and came across this thread.. Glad im not going crazy. I too have this exact sound, almost like a piece of metal rattling around in the exhaust pipe.. like a tinkle of sorts :)

S3 8V
40k miles
2016 plate

I’ve also noticed this sound on my S3 PFL has there been a fix issued by Audi?

Hi Folks, has anyone had this problem fixed??, my 1.8tfsi saloon 14 plate with 47k full audi history is doing this. Had it in at Audi today they said it was a camshaft position sensor solinoid , the one close to the turbo, number one cylinder. They unplugged it and the noise went away, plugged it back in and it was back, they then replaced the part but still the same , unplug new one and it’s gone, plug it back in and it’s back . It’s like a tring noise and sound like the turbo area but the technician said it was the solinoid. Funny when it’s unplugged the noise goes and plugged in it returns. Anyone have any ideas ??? This could be the fix Audi is looking for , be a hero and come up with the solution

Yes. The fix was for 1.8 & 2.0 EA888 Gen 3 engines. So, 1.8 and S3.

There was an Audi TPI about this and it’s earlier in this thread. Go back to Audi and get them to check that this was done on your car. They should do it regardless or dealer or indy service history.

The TPI doesn’t completely fix it but does make it less obvious.

In these threads some people got confused between this issue and the 1.4 125PS turbo rattle but that one was fixed with a circlip.

This thread is the main one but there is another here:

Hi John, I have read through this whole thread and cannot find the TPI that fixes this issue, do you have s number if it or any details on it , many thanks again, Gordon

Sorry, I can’t remember and sold the car last summer so no longer have the paperwork.

Dealer should know of the issue and campaign without the number.

Does anyone on here have the TPI details for this or any in formation on the update so I can go to my dealer , many thanks again folks

Dear Gordon; could you fix it?? Any solution?? Audi a3 8v

Hi , this is very Bizzare , I am actually in Audi at the moment , my car is booked in for them to check the noise . Audi technical have sent through a load of checks and parts to check , will be about 3 or 4 hours when they are checking it . I will let you know how I get on . Can you send me a video of your noise and I will see if it is the same

i have the 1.8 tfsi manual and it is mainly just in 2nd gear i hear the metallic sound when starting to pick the revs up, I dont really notice it in any other gears but could be because of engine and road noise at the higher speeds.

would be good to know what audi are saying about it after all these years of the problem being known

i think your problem sounds different from mine minds only makes the metalic scraping noise when in the same rev range most people in the thread seem to have aswell and i can only hear it in 2nd gear, just drove there and tried to hear it on other gears but couldnt hear a thing but it is there in 2nd gear everytime when starting to pick up speed, im sure i can put up with it for now but thanks for your help

Did Audi say anything about a TPI fix for the turbo noise ?

Ok, no problem but just to let you know it could be low oil pressure

did Audi tell you something? i have no a video about that sound, i will get it. but the mettalic sound when im driving, later i break my car, and before it stops at all, i accelerate again and has that mettalic sound. please let me know any new.

Hi Guys... I have read many posts in this discussion. I could not find the noise mentioned in the various messages. I have an Audi tts mk3 and I have this iron noise at low rpm. I am attaching it (from the second 8).

I removed the metal bulkheads, changed the high pressure pump but the noise remains.
I suspect about the wastegate and the gearbox (I hope not the latter).

I just wanted to understand if the noise you complain is mine.

The machine does not give any kind of problem however

Listening to the recording, this thread is about a different noise - think dragging a metal rake behind your car with low revs and low-ish throttle input.
