Hi guys.

Has any experienced this?

Please tell me I’m not the only one!?
I used a wet wipe designed for automotive glass use and it looks like it’s taken off the finish? Is this possible?

Any way of restoring it?

Thanks

Ouch - but I guess a wipe designed for automotive glass means windows / windscreen only and would contain alcohol and / or detergent. This appears to have stripped the anti-glare coating. I did a quick search and came up wih this thread:

OK - not a B9 but I expect the principle is the same. Worth a little research as this will no dount be an expensive item to replace.

Looks like the coating has possibly been scratched by the cloth you've used unfortunately. Only damp microfiber should be really used but I did read somewhere that the coating can be completely removed and a stick on, similar to mobile phones and tablets, used...

Yes - the link I posted covers that technique - complete removal of the anti-glare coating, then a screen protector applied. I think, short of replacement, that will be the only way to get it looking right again.

I think to get the ones on the B9’s it even easier than that, don’t quote me but I think from memory it can be removed without all the trim and torx screw faf.

Please check this before going in heaven handed

Definitely not scratches, I checked closely. I used a fresh cloth out of the pouch, the solvent must have attacked the finish

Yeah. It won’t need disassembling, just apply the protector and cut to size with a scalpel.

Thanks for your input fellas. Looks like those years spent working in a phone shop will come in useful after all :)

Post pics of the process, would be good for others that might experience the same issue

I’ve been trying to find the right size protector, I think I’ve got the right one and waiting for it to arrive. I’ll post a few pics of the process once it’s all here.

I’ve been trying to avoid the glass screen protector because I want to retain the matte look.

Mine had a few marks likes this. Nothing as bad but overtime I can only imagine it getting worse.

So, I managed to source the correct size protectors and finally fitted them.

This proved challenging as I wanted to retain the stock/matte finish and this could only be attained with a plastic protector. I bought the Brotect screen protector from Amazon, it took a few days as it came from Germany.

[The forum isn't allowing me to post a direct link to the protector. Paste the part number into the Amazon search: B0756YQTJR]

I had the issue of identifying the correct size of protector as for some reason nobody describes it in the known convention as "MMI Navigation Plus" or give its dimensions. Instead, it is labelled as "A4 F4 2015 MIB-HS". I'm guessing the MIB-H is the standard size display.

I taped off the bezel to be safe as I tried some IPA to no effect.

In the end, I used the same wipe which caused the damage to remove the rest of the coating. This took a while and needed a steady pressure to get all of it off.

After removing the coating I made sure to get as much dust off the screen as possible and then sat still in the car for a few minutes for any floating dust to settle. I applied the screen protector by peeling off the backing, lining up the top edges and allowing it to adhere by itself. I didn't force it.

I got a relatively good adhesion with only one air bubble (thanks phone shop :thumbs up:). I used a cloth around my finger and pushed the bubble to the edge by applying steady pressure.

All in all, I got a good finish. I'm pleased with the quality of the protector and it is quite forgiving if you don't get every speck of dust off the display.
I could have peeled it back and used a piece of sticky tape to get every last speck off but I was content with the finish and they're barely noticeable.
