As title suggests I will be changing my wheel bearings this coming week..as with everything I have been watching a few videos before I attempt any job. I will take the hubs off and get new bearings pressed in by a garage. But my question is as I've never done it before and have never had to do it to any other vehicle do hubs need to be changed aswell or are they generally long lasting?

you dont need to change the hubs, i removed the part of the bearing that normally stays on the hub with my dremel and a cutting disc.

Brilliant just makes it a bit cheaper for me to do. Especially with no work atm

New question..after having a word with nephew today he says when you buy new hubs bearing generally come in them aswell does anyone know if this is correct for our cars. If so it would just be simpler to change the whole hub and cost about the same anyways if I get them from gsf

the splines on the a3 hubs are different to those of the s3 and TT's

£30 each on gsf with the discount code for the s3 ones

But do the hubs come with the bearings already pressed in. Trying to ring gsf they keep cutting me off

New info.. front hubs and bearings are separate. Back hubs come with bearings

I have separate bearings for my rear arms..., the hubs still need pressing in like the fronts...

Oh okay not the information I was given. But to fair I trust you alot more than euro carparts

They may come complete in the FWD cars but not quattro...

My A2 is a hub/bearing that fits over a stub axle... the S3 is a pressed in bearing to the rear arm...

Thanks lad just bought wheel bearings and front discs..gonna check availability for hubs in gsf and grab them on monday. Then the fun begins

Finally got everything I needed in the post to finish this job today. Got everything apart to take hub carriers off. Just gonna spend the rest of my evening cleaning them and when mrs goes to bed going to try and sneak in a few passes of spray paint over them to clean them up. After taking my car part I've realised how bad some work can be that has been done by previous owners it's actually shocking. Wont bore you with details unless you really want to know.

Oh forgot to mention daughter who is three decided she was going to clean my car today..which involved going around with a metal scourer I believe there called. The metal things you can use to wash your dishes at home basically. Needless to say there are scratches. Worse yet couldn't even get mad as I remembered a story told to me by my parents which was me scratching I love you into my dads car with a screw driver when I was younger

At least she wanted to clean it, my 4 year old loves helping clean the car especially the snow foam part but at the minute she on wheel duty she can’t scratch them any more than they are

Mate headlight level sensor firstly zip tied down and rubbing against the drive shaft. So wires ar knackered. Will need replacing. And as it wasn't hanging in the right place I dont know where the right place is. Hub not was hand tight. I put my breaker bar on it and put strength into taking it off expecting resistance instead I met the ground. Nut didn't even seem to the right one as both sides were different to each other. And different to what came in my bearing kit. The worse thing is the passenger bearing had obviously been changed at some point. And when I took the brake disc off the hub literally fell out with it. Someone has obviously done some really bad jobs in the past. Hence why I will be taking the hub carrier hub and bearing to a professional to press in. As I'm by no means what I would call a mechanic. But I know how to do something safely. And what my limitations are. There was something else but cant remember what it was

If anyone takes there wheel off soon and can take a picture for me of the headlight level sensor for the front would be much appreciated

They are notorious for breaking front and rear ones are broken on mine I have a 2nd hand pair to fit but might try and source new if they are still available

I have a rear one ready to go on..and have painted and cleaned the bracket just haven't got round to doing it. Could do with the pic of the front one though. I've seen videos of people replacing the back ones as they seem to snap when their putting in new springs and shocks and forget to take them off

Got the passenger side all done and buttoned up earlier. When I went to do the drivers side as I decided to change the abs sensors the new one decided to split and break. So work postponed till tomorow when I get a new replacement from euro car parts. Also taking out the old sensors is a b****

Oh yes the wheel speed sensors on these is a pig of a job! I had to smash them out in pieces, rear ones are difficult to access front are a little better. I filed the holes on the hub and sanded the wheel speed sensors down a little to get a nice push fit. Be careful when putting new sensors on it is tempting to just smash them in with a hammer and extension and you will most probably damage the new sensors this way.

Your lucky then your hubs are clean, the back of my hubs were corroded and there was loads of surface rust all around the sensor and the bolt holding it on.
