Mine is due later this month, with lockdown etc all were supposedly extended automatically for a further 6 months?. With garages opening back up has the auto extension now been removed & cars will need to be tested at there due date?. Cheers guys.

Afaik it’s still in place, of course there is nothing to say that you still can’t get it done

I am a service manager and start back tomorrow, the wife’s car was due the test at the start of may , I’ll be taking it to work one day this week and getting the Mot and service done as they are both due the same time much like a large number of people

The extension scheme stays until further notice.
Any revised and extended mot expiry date that has been issued since the 30th march is valid , no need to rush out just yet , they wont be cancelling the extended expiry date.
But still prudent to get it done when you can rather than wait until the last minute.

If you type your number plate in on the .gov website, it will tell you when it is due to have an MOT with the extension in place, if you are eligible

Afaik MOT testing stations are open and carrying out testing?
(At least my local ones - In North Hampshire - are)

Had it done on Wednesday at my Local Audi/VW specialist, passed with flying colours.

Strange, not quite sure why garages are carrying out MOT's when they will automatically extend six months, suppose some people still have them for peace of mind, mine extended a week back and not a fan of MOT's at the best of times so was quite happy with that.

Mine runs out on 29 June; still showing as that date on the GOV website. It say the extension will be added seven days beforehand, so the 22 June, which just happens to be the day I'm getting the car serviced. And yes, I'm having the MOT done at the same time. To use @DieselJake 's phrase, it's for peace of mind. I prefer that to relying on a government agency to get its admin right.

From reading about someone else's experience, he submitted his car just within a month before the MOT was due if you ignore the extension, by doing that he has "lost" almost a month as the rules state that if you hand a car in more than a month early then you will lose the ability to get the next MOT tagged onto the end of the current one. Now that came as a shock to me, so if the extensions are still being applied when my wife's Polo is due in mid August, I'll plan/aim to preserve the MOT renewal time by booking it in for the day or the day after it expires.

It seems that many people are planning on using this situation to "grab" 6 months extra and not using that extension as a "date by which the car must be MOT'd" - all maybe a bit annoying for people that until now, booked their car in for testing "as soon as possible".

Mines booked in for next week as i didnt want to leave it until the last minute, glad i did now as it seems the gov have shortened the time until the 1st of august , that will catch a fair few people out aswell if there mot is on or after the 1st of aug.
I have until 26th of oct but just in case they bring it foward i'm getting it done asap.

Got this info from my insurers:

On 30 March, drivers were granted a 6-month exemption from MOT testing.

Lockdown restrictions are easing, and all drivers with an MOT due from 1 August are being urged to book an MOT test. This is a legal requirement.

Drivers who have an MOT test due before 1 August will still be granted the 6-month extension. For example, if your MOT is due on 31 July, it’ll be extended to 31 January 2021.

But even if your vehicle is exempt, you should take it to the garage immediately if you notice something wrong. You can still be prosecuted for driving an unsafe vehicle.

A few garages UK-wide remained open during the outbreak to conduct essential repairs. Now, 90% of garages are open across the country.

Roads Minister Baroness Vere said:

“As people return to our roads, it is vital that motorists are able to keep their vehicles safe. That’s why as restrictions are eased, from 1 August MOT testing will again become mandatory.

Garages across the country are open and I urge drivers who are due for their MOT to book a test as soon they can.”

If you’re vulnerable or self-isolating and your car needs a repair or your MOT is due, contact your local garage. They may be offering safe pick-up and drop-off services.
