8V VCDS Mods

Does anyone know if you can enable a battery level/voltage indicator via VCDS? I've seen it on the older MMI generations, but not for the 8v.

Looks like the needed hardware has been included within the MY20 parts bin then :)

It would appear so, let me know if you want me to scan anything to confirm.

Would you know if a battery voltage display is possible?

Things have moved on from long coding, with newer platforms it’s more about adaptations.

In theory speed limiter should be possible as I have seen the settings but finding the correct compatible stalks might be an issue.

Stalks with limiter can be found on Q2

Hi team,

Long time lurker and first time poster. Not sure if I'm posting in the right place or if I should have started my own thread. So apologies if I need to move/recreate my post.

I'm having a frustrating time getting my North American 2018 Audi RS3 to properly detect traffic signs for Traffic Sign Recognition. I've been looking at the Ross-Tech forum, some Golf R forums, Audizine, Audi-Sport, etc.

The symptoms I received:
MMI - Vehicle: Driver assistance - Traffic signs : always shows "The selected system is currently unavailable"
Virtual Cockpit - Traffic signs - Pretty much always show "No traffic sign information available". Until today... where pulling into my parking garage at work which doesn't have any signs, it showed (120) next to the outdoor temperature display.
Virtual Cockpit - after starting and driving a bit, it will chime and say "Traffic Sign Recognition Currently Restricted: Please see user manual"

Here are the changes that I performed using VCDS:

Control unit 5F (Information Electrical)
Adaptation
Select Car_Function_List_BAP_Gen2 traffic_sign_recognition_0x21
Value=Active
Select Car_Function_Adaptations_Gen2-menu menu_display_road_sign_identification
Value=Active
Select Car_Function_Adaptations_Gen2-menu menu_display_road_sign_identification_over_threshold_high
Value=Active

Control unit A5 (Front Camera)
Coding
Byte 16
Bit 4
"01 Traffic sign recognition (FTE) active"
Check

Control unit 17
Coding
Byte 5
Bit 2
"Traffic Sign Recognition installed"
Check

Control unit A5 (Front Camera)
Adaptation
"Road sign detection fusion mode,Road sign fusion"
Value=Fusion

But I have also tried Road sign detection

So it appears that it may not be properly detecting US signs? Or did I mess something up? Also is there a way to remove the chime/alert regarding checking my user manual? I know that some people have encountered this same issue in other threads.

Where did you source your coding from?

Hey DJAlix! Thanks for the fast response!

I got the coding from:
http://www.ozaudi.com/forums/showthread.php/45848-8V-VCDS-Mods/page17?p=403470#post403470

https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?9109361-Traffic-Sign-Assist-works-on-2018-R-in-NA

I think some various other forum threads and posts.

I've heard that there's a dongle you can purchase that codes it for you, but I'd rather learn how to figure it out with the VCDS (if possible) since I have it and personal curiosity!

Here's a link to some pictures if you're interested: https://photos.app.goo.gl/saCzA6WN67GLDvFu6

My notes are a little different:

Module: 5F

  • Adaption: (63) vehicle function list BAP traffic_sign_recognition_0x21 = Activated
  • Adaption: (151) vehicle menu select-service menu_display_road_sign_identification = Activated

Module: A5 (20103)

  • Coding > Byte 1, Bit 0 Enable - "01 traffic sign recognition (FTE) active"

Module: 17

  • Coding > Byte 5, Bit 2 Enable - "Traffic Sign Recognition installed"

Module: A5 (20103)

  • Adaption: Display end of speed limit symbol = Activated
  • Adaption: Road sign detection fusion mode = Road sign fusion

Thanks DJAlix! I'll totally give it a shot.

I read somewhere that the coding had to be in a specific order. Does that make sense?

Correct, should be in the order of my notes. Have activated this a few times but a while ago so cannot remember if I needed to mess about with anything else. Would be good to get some feedback.

Thanks DJ Alix,

Should I undo all of my previous coding then and proceed using your provided procedures?

You are amazing! I really appreciate it.

I would. Always good to back out and start fresh, and make sure you have your original coding noted down also

Hey DJAlix,

It appears that I don't have this function.

Coding > Byte 1, Bit 0 Enable - "01 traffic sign recognition (FTE) active"

However my Byte 16 has Bit 0-7 with one of them being VZE (bit 4).

Is that the one I want?

Also A5 I do not have this adaptation:
Adaption: Display end of speed limit symbol = Activated. From my understanding that is for an older camera model?

So I took it for a test drive using the posted steps and it doesn't quite appear to work consistently. It reported the speed limit as 30 but the sign said 35. It then gave the restricted function error again. Then it seemed fixated on 30 as I changed to a street that was 25.

So just got back from a long text drive. It seems that once the TSR gets the error, it stops updating. It kind of works but not quite, gets the error, then stops working.

Not sure if it matters, but I do not have Audi Connect.

If you are using VCDS then use the LCODE2 option to code it, then test.

Ciao,

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the TSR to work on my RS3. So I reverted the settings. Guess I'll keep doing research!

Thanks DJAlix. Do you also think it might be because my CAN Gateway is using an older firmware? I ask because I saw this thread and it looked like they updated their CAN Gateway firmware to eliminate the error: https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/traffic-sign-recognition-issue-affter-mib2-retrofit.385533/

My firmware version is: 3Q0 907 530 L

Your vehicle stock hardware wise?

Pretty much electronics wise. I have a Unitronic ECU/TCU tune, a turbo inlet, and an intake.

But camera, stereo, etc. are all stock with the exception of flashing TJA to the camera.

might be a firmware issue however I have never had this issue when activating on the vehicles that have been to me.

Thanks DJAlix. I also wonder if it has something to do with the Predictive Route data too.

It's weird cause it will show the setting on the MMI, it'll show Traffic Signs under the VC, it'll flash the warning and get stuck displaying a speed or something that doesn't seem to correspond with the speed limit signs actual (e.g., showing 30 on a 55 MPH highway/30 in a 35 MPH street/120 on a narrow side street).

No joy.

I tried:

Car_Function_List_BAP_Gen2-traffic_sign_recognition_0x21_msg_bus = Terminal 15
Car_Function_List_BAP_Gen2-traffic_sign_recognition_0x21_msg_bus = Comfort Data Bus

I tried enabling PSD in one of the long coding menus (which eliminated the Traffic Sign Recognition Restricted warning). However it gave a new message of "Traffic sign recognition is not currently available in your Country" (or something very similar to that).

Also this was already checked off for me:
A5 > Long Coding
  • Byte 1 > Bit 0 = Active

However for my car, Byte 16 Bit 4 is the VZE/Traffic Sign Recognition Active option for me.

I went ahead and disabled everything for now and will try to get a VCP cable to update the software version on the CAN Bus.

I get this error code and I'm not sure if this is what is causing the issue. I got this with Terminal 15.

Car is complaining that it’s been sat on battery for too long.

While VCP can indeed flash / update control modules please be careful. The VCP cable does not have the same transfer rate as many other flashing tools and takes a long time to flash. You WILL need to put the car on a stable power source. Your main issue will be obtaining the needed file from a safe source and if your vehicle is under warranty then give it a kiss goodbye.

Thanks DJAlix. I do have a battery tender I can use while coding.

I'll keep trying other combinations of buses and whatnot. But just at a loss about what's different about my car vs others.

I checked in with another local RS3 owner and he said that when he tried, he too got inconsistent results.

Hi is there away that i can check what vcds mods and tweeks i have done whit the vcds

Thanks

Hello everyone! I have the inserts illuminated, but they go off while driving, they remain accessible only when the car is opened and the doors are opened (engine running) I would like to have them accessed during night driving, does anyone give me a hand?

Hook up odis and have a look.. Odis service is your best bet. These are rare on A3...VCDS wil not have the proper coding... Guess they are wired to the door module.. Could also be the bcm (dash lighting) As a last resort you could also try to change the doorhandle /cupholder lights to feed these..

Always wondered how these are wired..

Found this on ali..

Any idea how to program these??

Also, because i have a 3 door.. these will not fit.. Anyone know a way to fit to 3 drs??
Seller doesnt want to help.. I guess 3dr models are not sold there..

This depents on how secure you are with back-ups.
Of course you can do it with help of a Professional shop. But i think a lot is possible with odis e and s. (5054 win7)

I think more problems arrise with obd11 then odis..
But stick to adaptation and coding. And store your old vakjes b4 you start.

ODIS E is only available to authorised developers and ODIS S is only available to authorised service partners. Both no longer support windows 7.

I don't know, mine are original audi. I know that other a3s keep them accessible even during the night march, mine doesn't :(

Tried searching for this but with all the talk of enabling visual parking hard to see if there’s any results ;)

Does anyone have the info on how to code in auto activation of the front parking sensors?

Had this on my previous Golf and missing it on the RS3, would like them to come on automatically when slowly approaching something rather than having to hit the button, thanks!

Do you have Ross Tech?
I have the instruction sheet somewhere, I will try and dig it out for you.

Its quite easy though.

It’ll be using a Rosstech cable yes, not purchased yet though

Wanted to make sure it could be done before buying!

It can 100% be done, I retrofitted the front parking sensors to my A3 8V Sline (before buying my current S3) and its in the coding, you can also change the speed which is activates from, so below 8mph my front sensors activate.

If you drop me a PM when you have your Ross tech I will send you some instructions

Thanks
