Hi chaps, I have a 2002 A4 saloon, in the last week the alarm has started sounding unexpectedly, though the indicator lights aren't flashing at the same time. Reading other threads on this forum it could be a the internal battery. I just want to know, is it possible to use the car with the alarm disconnected, or does the cars ECU need to have a reading from the alarm unit. I have a 2002 Passat that I had to remove the siren from and continue to use without issue ! Tia

Replace for peace of mind tbh.

I thought that the plan was to open up the siren housing, check the battery type/size, buy new battery - well check its voltage first in case the problem lies elsewhere, then get a new battery if necessary buy a new battery box if no suitable sized battery can be found.

2002 Passat giving alarm problems, hum, I have not heard of any complaints coming from the guy that bought my 2000 Passat 5 years ago - and if it was an issue I would have been told about it!

Now where is Maplin when you need them?

Wow this is fortuatous. Must be about the end on life for those batteries.
I have a 2003 avant B6 and was woken this morning by the alarm going off, but no indicators flashing. opened doors and started car and yet car continued to scream blue murder. even checked it wasn't reverse parking speaker, and turned motion sensors and lift sensor off. still sounded.
hope it is this battery you talk of.

Here is a link to our video on removing and replacing your alarm siren - hope it helps!

Already out. Using two jcb AA Nimh 1200mAh batteries. Dremeled the seam to open and remelted plastic after replacing smd resistor that was ******** from acid leak. Hope it works...

Fingers crossed, the battery in them can do so much damage, hope you've got it cracked!

Quite common for “rear glass breakage sensors” on the avants to cause alarm going off randomly.

Oh, had rear part of headlining down to fit surface mount DAB+/FM Ariel. and previously had hatch trim off to investigate where glass antennae was (rear quater glass). what does it look like and where is it located.
Got mixed up with my 'parallel & serial' cell setup from GCSE physics, so thought i only needed 3v not 6v, hence the 2 x AA cells. Have ordered a 6 cell enclosure and shall bridge one cell (5 x 1.2v = 6v). So have to go through hole procedure again. Luckily set it up for external power, so quick enought fix.

Glass breakage sensors are in the rear side windows. Have had to bypass them a few time to stop peoples alarms going off. And the rear window has the heater circuit and FM ariels etc but as far as I remember no dedicated glass breakage sensors. But ultrasonics should work inside also.

My 54 Avant has been doing this on and off for the last 6 months.
Recently it's been getting progressively worse until the point it's been going off constantly regardless of being activated when locking, left unlocked or even going whilst driving!
So after finding this thead I followed the Total Technik guide on removal, have to say it's a very handy channel to say the least.
After removing the siren I discovered as expected when I'd cut it open the unit that it was fried! Actually it was smelling rather burnt which is a concern :flushed:
So basically I've put everything back into place and the car is functioning/locking e.t.c. absolutely fine without it.
