I'm looking at getting a used MTM Cantronic. The seller states that it is fully functional on his Golf R mk7.5 and Mk7 prior to that. Does anyone know if this will work on a Facelift S3 without any re-flashing?

I had a look at https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/mtm-m-cantronic-should-i.266294/ and https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/thank-you-goodbye-and-whats-this-worth.319053/

Someone states that it should work, but then someone mentioned that it goes into a "limited/locked" mode and there wasn't anything definitive after that.

I had the MTM on my pfl S3.
On the back of the unit embedded in the model number was "300" which is for the 300bhp model, either S3 or Golf R
There is a different version that has "310" there instead.
From my understanding it's not compatible and will just act as a pass through.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say, but why have 2 different models!

Everyone used to think they were tied to the cars vin and had to be sent back for reprogramming, that turned out to be not true. Even though there was/is a charge for it
I bought mine second hand and it worked fine, I also bought a used one for my SQ5 and that works fine too
Maybe it is just a marketing ploy and it's the same box.

Only one way to find out mate.....you can always sell on if not!

Not true. Some units locked, some didn’t and MTM had no idea why. USA units are also different to U.K. units software wise. My betting is that a Golf R mapped unit will not work correctly in an S3 I am afraid.

I think you're right, after all, there wouldn't be two different versions (I didn't know this before starting this thread).

It's misleading that MTM show a Dyno reading from a Seat Ateca Cupra on the Audi S3 product, however, this same dyno reading is on the Golf R unit page too: https://www.mtm-usa.com/collections/mk7-golf-r/products/m-cantronic-golf-vii-r-360-hp-265-kw-v-max

This could be a genuine mistake/laziness though.

I actually know the guy who is selling the unit in question, its from a red golf R :) You could always test the unit before you buy, am sure he would not mind going for a test drive with you however I don't think its gonna work correctly.

 I'm not local to him unfortunately but that is the one. He said it came off his mates Golf R mk7.5 which runs the same power as the FL S3 and he said it ran smoother on that.

Issue is, I can't find anything online saying that they're interchangeable between models

There are differences between VW and Audi. Really you would need to get confirmation from MTM but they are not gonna be interested in answering the question as you are not taking a unit from them. Will see if I can ask the question.

Yep, I think they'll tell me to do one haha! Much appreciated if you can ask the question!

What does it actually say on the back of the unit?

The sticker has fallen off/missing from the bottom of the unit which makes me more apprehensive. Are there any other places it could be?

MTM have a different part number for the Golf and S3 too. It's looking like its incompatible but it could be a marketing ploy

The sticker doesnt just fall off, its stuck on well. Or at least it has been on the 2 I've had.
I've no idea if its repeated inside but it does sound like it's time to walk away and listen to your gut feeling.
The S3 is one of the more common fitments on the MTM so I'm sure it won't be long until you get one

I have just been told that the box will "work" as long as your vehicles ECU is within the units compatible list however there is differences in the R vs S3 mapping, hence the different part numbers. Personally I would look for the correct unit. There are also differences between the Gen 1 (rectangular red/black/silver) and Gen 2 (square silver) units. I have a 2017 vehicle myself and needed a gen 2 unit for proper operation after testing.
