The dreaded slow coolant leak started 2 months ago when the temp symbol was flashing. The level was about 20mm below the min line. I topped the level to just above the min.
Anyway you know the story, I'm now doing this every 2 weeks. The coolant is clear pink and the oil is clean. No leaks I can see anywhere, I'm thinking pin hole in the radiator? 3.0tdi ASB.
Thoughts please everyone. Thanks Mark.

I don't know if this is part of the problem but 4 or 5 times since I bought the car, 18 months, I've left home in the morning and as I'm driving up the steep road I've noticed clouds of white smoke, well James Bond would have been proud. I always thought that was the ecu over fuelling. If I stopped and restarted the engine behaved.
Just wondering if the 2 problems could be linked?

I had same problem on my BKN engine turned out to be EGR cooler passing water straight into exhaust just took cooler out quiet a big job and piped round it took me months to find the leak.
Good luck

That would account for no external leaks and water in the exhaust.
I took mine off and re-piped when I removed my EGR valve. Not sure the 3.0tdi has quite the same set up though.

Do the ASB and BKN engines share the egr and cooler set up?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124090331861

If it does turn out to be egr cooler would it be worth replacing the whole lot or can it be bypassed and blanking the egr. I understand removing the egr completely will be mot failure.

ASB and BKN are same 233/204 that’s only difference if it’s mapped out can be removed and bypassed
Yes it should fail with no egr on but it’s only a visual check so in theory if top cover in place they can’t remove it and it’s hidden mine was off for 4 yrs passed mot every time no probs
Good luck
If you do go to do the bypass it’s a pretty big job both inlets off to get to bolts and order stuff before ya strip it can’t remember size but you need a T piece maybe 2 just not sure

Is it not possible to gain enough access to the coolant hoses and cut and join them or just clamp them?

Oh another thing I read was that losing coolant into the exhaust can damage the DPF?

Unfortunately not as one of the hoses is under the egr cooler and goes into the block you can only just see it if you know where to look

That is how it sits in the engine as you look the open pipe at the top runs to air intake if that’s still in place you are unable to see the bottom water pipe near the bracket

I take it the flow of coolant on this hose is critical and you can't just clamp the supply?

Depending on year of car might not need a dpf on not sure on what year they had to have them July 2008 rings a bell but not 100% sure

Yes critical that supply’s coolant to the near side engine block clamp that and the water can’t complete the circuit/return

2006 plate so maybe mine doesn't have a DPF.

I would think yours is a non DPF model but they did start to trial them on 07 plates I’ve done dpf pressure sensor on a 3.0 tdi 57 plate.
