Wrong tyres put on? Help and advice

When I purchased my A4 it can with 20” wheels but I have noticed that the rims stick out a fraction from the tyres surely this can’t be right? Any advice would be appreciated

Some budget tyres are like this, could be a size too small though, maybe the previous owner did it to save a few quid.

Must be the offset, stretching a smaller size tyres so that they don't rub on the arches, the outside poke must out quite a bit , if you take the wheel of on the inside of the rim you will se the offset which will be the Et with a number next to it also the width which will be 9j or 8.5 j , www.willtheyfit.com will give you some information on set ups

So what size rims are popular for A4s then without any problems?
 
Looks like your car is a b9 A4 if it's the one on your profile. I've got 19" on my b9 S4.
