Too expensive in Covid market???

Hi all.
I currently drive a 2019 Tiguan 230 RLine tech. only had it since September but it’s my second Tiguan and I’m kinda fed up of it!

I owned an S3 in 2015 and ordered an RS3 in 2016 before bottling it and cancelling the order!

unfortunately the itch has never gone away and I’m back to looking at RS3s.....looking for something with very low miles, 2018+.

I reckon my Tiguan is worth around £27k .....
I’ve seen this very appealing saloon not too far away, but I feel it’s a bit pricey.....

It cant have cost much more when new. What are your thoughts? What would be a good deal?

Anybody seen anything better? Not so many dealers advertising at the moment what with Covid on the go....
 
Spec is everything on these. To give you some idea, I bought a June 2016 prefl in November 2018 for 35.5k from an indie dealer. I sold it 14 months later and put 13k miles on it. It had massive spec - everything except for carbon inlays and driver assistance package (adaptive cruise etc). I part exchanged it for 32.5k, so a 3k loss which i thought was fantastic.

On the other hand, my friend bought a Pretty much bog standard spec for 32k, and ended up pxing for 25k. Very big difference and over double the loss in cash over the same time period.

I px’d against a facelift rs3, a 67 reg. again, huge spec. Only thing it didn’t have was matrix lights, carbon inlays and carbon ceramic brakes. I retrofitted matrix lights and I had the inlays skinned - ceramics I wasn’t bothered for at all as cold bite wasn’t great. I paid 42k for this car with 10k on the clock. ArA blue.

using this logic, that car up there does seem on the pricey side. Looks like it’s got tinted glass and sports exhaust, with super sports seats. There are cars out there with more spec for less money and 15-20k on the clock.

if it were me, I’d be looking at spending no more than 40 for massive spec and around 34-36k for a low spec example.

I’m certainly looking for something with very low miles.
The car above is tidy looking with upgraded wheels and black pack. Also has the seats, tints and exhaust as you say.

So the question is, realistically what would it have cost new? As it’s now 2 years old and really low miles I kinda feel £40k is a bit pricey.

I’m pretty sure the facelift started at 45k with the best spec around 55

Lol..... you say you didn’t ‘lose’ much on the PX, yet the retrofitting of all those extras has cost money so that needs to be taken into account also.
It’s alright saying you only lost 5K but if you spent 3/4K on retrofitting your ‘big spec’ then you’ve lost some of that money also.

On another note if I knew a car I was buying had Matrix lights ‘retrofitted’ I’d be asking serious questions about how well and complete the works were done, as most retrofits of this type also rely on other systems to work safely and not compromise other safety related systems.

Cost of the retrofit was £450. Matrix light units were £850 for both (used), sold my old headlights for £800, plus the install which took 2 days and cost £450, which makes a difference of £500. So factor that in I suppose the swap cost me £3500. i had all the other hardware needed as I had DAP. The retrofit is well documented online. Not a difficult retrofit and they all work as they should, as factory. No errors displayed with VCDS or the like. I’m a very particular individual and I’d be the first person to complain if there was any kind of problem :)

original inlays were kept and I had a second set of s3 inlays skinned. £50 for the inlays + £200 for skinning. Won’t be difficult to get the full £250 back for the skinned carbon units, so that hasnt cost me a thing. So I guess the total cost of the swap was £3500 taking everything into account.

Personally I’d put the car in the op as a bit on the high side, spec wise the only real thing it has as options are black pack and the seats.

With the wheels is it that they have the black bits on them that make them an option over standard?

Doesn’t even have the B&O stereo which would make it an instant no for me.

At least with a facelift you don’t have the issue of waiting for a car with the tech pack to get a halfway decent screen! (Not that the screen gets used much, just that the standard pfl screen just looks so damn awful it makes things look ****).

£40k seems steep for a 67 plate.

Do you use the rear seats much? I recently bought an 18 plate TTRS from an Audi main dealer, black with black pack and 20 inch alloys for less than that saloon.

For reference, I paid a bit over the odds for a 2018 saloon with 25k on the clock because it was the perfect spec and they were like gold dust. I paid £40k in November.

(Black optics, Black paint, SS seats, B&O, Pan sunroof, sports exhaust etc etc)
 
I paid just over £43k for a brand new factory order RS3 in Nardo with comfort/sound pack, sports pack (mag ride and exhaust) matrix lights, dimming mirrors, titanium wheels etc. Had the black pack added afterwards by getting it wrapped professionally as it wasn’t an option. (You cannot tell unless you are looking and ultra close)

Ive withdrawn from negotiations as the dealer started to lowball my Tiguan......”unpredictable market, lots of trade buyers not dealing, hard to get it underwritten, blah, blah”.

Funny how none of this affects his selling price on the RS3 though!!
I really hate car dealers......

I will keep looking. looking for a minimum of 2018, RS3 ideally in blue. No more than 10000 miles with mid range spec.

I hate it say it but be patient - many dealers are trying to put on a brave face on the current situation- but in a few months they will be literally giving their cars away.

I've been looking at a used RS Q3 over the lockdown and its dropped almost £2k in that time from near £32k to £30k.
I'd say it's a buyers market but only if you have no part ex as the trade in will be low too.
I spoke to the dealer again recently and he says its been really busy.
Do I believe him?...... not a chance, just a typical car dealer playing the usual game.
Don't pay over the odds as there are plenty for sale

I wouldn’t say avoid the newer cars with OPF, proven to have pretty much the same performance, yes the sound is slightly muted but the exhaust gets louder with more miles and if you’re going down the tuning route this can add in the pops and burbles, I definitely wouldn’t want mine any louder than it is now but we each have our own preferences and if louder is your thing then yes consider a pre OPF car or a lovely PFL example for the real ASBO noise! Just don’t think an OPF car is inferior as it’s not, it’s an amazing RS3 albeit moving with the times we are now in with those EU regs....let’s face it, unless you’re going to run an older car for years then we’re all going to have to own a car with these filters in at some stage, I’m definitely not disappointed with my purchase :icon thumright:
