Are my brakes damaged ?

Can anyone tell me if these rear break pads and discs are needing changed it looks as if the break pad has only wore away on the corners of the pads, and also looks like the pad could be scraping on the disc aswell, should i replace these or will it still be ok to drive around ?

Discs go rusty on the outer edges of the pads, rust wears away the pad, the pressure doesn't bear down at that point on the disc and the rust creeps inwards, the rust grinds away more pad etc.
Strictly speaking, if the brakes pass MOT performance standard no, but if they were mine I would change them. You'll probably find the backs of the discs are even worse. Always change in axle pairs.

They look old, rusty and grotty - I would guess the originals - as above, I'd change them (discs and pads) no question. It's never ideal when the whole pad is not making proper contact with the disc surface.

If theres a rusty lip on the edge of the disk, tap it all the way round with a hammer and it will chip off. Clean and grease the pads and caliper carriers where the pads slide. Braking should improve a bit as the pads etc are moving properly and they should last a bit longer before you need to replace them. I would suspect the pads are sticking in the carriers which is stopping them meeting the disks squarely and stopping rust forming on the disk surface.

Yes i think they are the originals still on the car the discs dont look far off falling apart from the rust and rot, i am on 36k miles and got it last summer at 30k miles i am the 2nd owner, it will be going for service and mot on 1st june so i will get the pads and discs changed aswell at the same time

If the discs were good and you were just changing pads, yes. But those discs in the photos have had it.
Don't waste your time. your discs are rusty, you can't recover them and they won't clean up without skimming which isn't cost effective. Replace the discs and pads. If you are asking the question, I would guess you don't have the equipment to disable the electronic handbrake. I'd trust the job to my local garage, a main dealer will rob you blind for what is a fairly simple hour's work.

Discs have had it. Replace them and the pads. Have you checked the fronts?

yes the fronts are fine and look like the discs on the front have been changed at somepoint and still reasonable amount left on the pads and the full pad looks to be in place unlike the rear pads which look a bit buckled/bent but happen to have more meat left on the pads
 

I think on the rear pads they have the edges at an angle I think it’s something to do with squeaking.

My rear pads need replacing but going to wait until July when it’s an MOT.

Rear disc's will always go rusty and corrode., as when braking, it's the front disc's that do most of the stopping.

What you really need to do is some big stops to get the rears working. But that's not always possible in day to day driving. I had to replace the rears on my S3 when the pads were perfectly fine. But needed to replace the pads too.

Had the same on my Twingo RS, and that's when the garage told me to apply the handbrake slightly every now and then when driving along to get the rear pads gripping the discs. Stops them corroding and prolongs their life.

With electronic handbrakes you can't do that. So rears will need replacing sooner that you'd like them to be. Same as Automatic cars. Front discs will wear out sooner than a manual car, as with a manual you can use the gears to slow down, thus less wear on the brakes.

Good things, Italian tune-ups, and a dying art.

Today's pipsqueaks don't appreciate the value of old school stuff like this.

I'd imagine they would.

The delivery bloke from the local curry house certainly does. He tore off from our place the other weekend like his trousers were on fire.

Actually, maybe they were.

I know WBAC say they'll buy anything, but I think they'd draw the line at an ancient mermaid blue Touran 1.9TDI thrashed to within an inch of its life which stank of a mixture of diesel and tarka dal and had an atlas of bright yellow stains all over the upholstery.

The curry was corking, mind. First rate.

And we got three free poppadoms as well.

I used to work for Ferodo, who became Federal Mogul, who via Teves has the OE contract for to supply the brake pads for that VAG platform. As mentioned above the pads have the edges chamfered as part of the production process. It done to aid the bedding process. Have you got the warning light for pad wear?

No the warning light has not came on but i thought it was only the front pads that have the warning light, i don’t think i can ever remember having the warning light come up for my rear brake pads that where low or maybe i’ve never had them that low before to activate the warning on the dashboard ?

Ive had to put the car off the road till brakes get done next week as the car feels like its slower as if one of the rear tyres has got the brake stuck on and doesn’t feel like its spinning properly, feels sluggish when taking off in dynamic i think the pads must have stuck together with the amount of heat coming off them over last few days as cant get booked in garage till next week but the problem seemed to have gotten worse today so just leaving it parked up for now
