Hi!
I am looking to buy an audi a3 2.0 tfsi quattro, 2005 model.
I have heard that many of the 2.0 tfsi motors are having problems with high oil consumption.
I cannot find anything on the model im looking to buy.
Anyone here had problems or heard about problems with this spesific model?

What was the difference between the 2.0 tfsi engine information you did find and your model?

what is your model specifically?

The oil consumption problem was mostly on the EA888 chain cam engines, a 2005 will have the earlier engine.

I found that audi a4, a5 and q5 had huge problems with a defect in the engine, leading to oil leaks.
I also read on some websites just searching about the 2.0 tfsi engine, that the "early" 2.0 tfsi engines had problems.

2005 cars with 2.0tfsi engines don’t have the oil burning problem.

Check the cam follower, fuel pump, the intake cam end where the follower sits for wear from not changing the follower & oil pump unit, these I know 1st hand are issues if maintained badly.

That's usually the problem. They aren't common failures, they are commonly neglected for maintenance.
Too many people buy them for the performance figures, stick the cheapest petrol they can find in them and buy the cheapest remap available, and then expect them to run forever with little or no work done to them.

Thank you very much for your quick responses. The car is for sale on the other side of the country, so i need all the information i can get.
Much appreciated.

I strongly suggest a longer visual inspection, not sure how flexible they are to let you unbolt few things, but if that cam is worn it's 2k just for that rrp to replace.

Also split dv is very common, so if powers down or boost jittery, that maybe the cause.

What does dv stand for ? English is not my first language, therefore some abbreviations are unknown to me. When you say cam, i pressume its the cam shaft, right ?

Afternoon all.

Are these faults limited to just the 2.0 or the 1.8tfsi too?

I have a 2011 (2010 plate) a3 which I have had for approx 4 months in which time I've done less than 800 miles and the oil light has come on twice!

Any help / recommendations on how to tackle would be much appreciated

Thanks

R

I assume you are saying the oil level has dropped twice rather than anything more sinister. Try 5W - 40 oil next time. It helped our TT.

Thays correct. I have topped the oil twice after doing less than 800 miles. Will try the thicker grade oil but surely this counts as excessive consumption?

Have you looked around the engine to see if there are any signs of a leak?
Any spots of oil on the drive under the car?

Mine had a rare moment of oil usage once and an investigation led to me finding a misting of oil on the underside of the engine cover. This gave me an area to look at and hinted that if it was a misting of oil then it must be coming out under pressure. A few hose inspections later and I noticed one of the PCV pipes had a hairline crack in it. £20 and 20 mins later, job done. no more oil consumption and a cleaner engine cover.
