Considering S4 Avant as a dad wagon

So, im contemplating chopping in my B8.5 saloon for an B8.5 S4 Avant now we have our first born....

Did consider a 3.0 TDi Avant but in my opinion diesel cars in the near future are going to be very hard to re-sell so going petrol seems logical, and buying a slow one well just no.

I do alot of mway miles, 18 to 20k a year. My daily commute is a 55 mile round trip of nearly all A road dual carriageway...

We all know the book figure mpg's are lies, so realisticly what could i expect from a spirited drive in an S4... I average around 35 mpg in my TDi Quattro the way i drive it. Regularly 40+ mpg on long 300 mile mway drives up north to inlaws.

As for servicing i dont bother with main dealer on 4+ year old cars so its always specialist indy garages.
 
I'd think, going by what you are currently getting with your TDI q, 20>25MPG while I agree with what you said about the future "love" for diesels, I'd think that petrol prices will get jacked up sharpish as we head for an EV future, and that would hurt the future resale price of a car like an S4, I certainly don't have any great ideas for getting back much cash on any S4 type of car I have or would have in the future, but that does not bother me, I've got one and I enjoy having one, I'll willingly suffer the consequences - but I'd rather not need to.

If your buying an S4 to put big miles on it then you are always going to spend and lose lots of money and it will be a purchase bought with the heart and not with the head - like all "nice" purchases - sorry!
 
Yep go for it, I have 3 kids in a modded B8.5 S4 we do 10-15k a year. The cars now on 105k not missed a beat. Avg 25mpg but soon drops when kids not in the car. No plans to sell, I've sunk around £35k including mods total and lucky if I get £15k. I knew this and car is not a house. There's no car on the market as a package for £15k that would be close to this S4. Great cars but you can't leave them stock as they soon become disappointing when you can reliably increase the power 30% cheaply.

Yeah im under no illusion that i wont lose money upon resale! I got my current A4 for a great price 2 1/2 years ago so fortunatly ill only lose maybe 4 or 5k if i part ex it.

First thing I did was look at Revo software etc.... completely transformed my TDi. 3rd 4th and 5th in gear acceleration is fantastic now!
 
30mpg is a very realistic figure, I have had 36 on motorway journeys when half the M5 was set at 50mph! Driven enthusiastically 26 is about right although it is easy to get less

I did a 50 mile commute in the S4 for just short of 3 years. 30mpg or even a little more was doable.
 
I echo all of the above comments; I think also that as the years go on, the B8 generation will be remembered as the high water mark of the S4.
 
My "dad wagon" was a B5 S4 avant, but the B8 is so much better in every way.

If you do go for it then note that cars built earlier than late 2013 "may" be subject to issues that you should be aware of.
 
The later 2014 models have the crec engine which is supposedly the best of the supercharged models and they seem pretty well fault free.

Planning on buying the latest B8.5 I can find i think so 64 or 15 plate. Part ex my trusty 14 plate Black Edition TDi.
 
There are later B8.5s - for certain some were registered in 2016, possibly including the latter part.
 
Interesting guys, I'm reading this after putting a deposit down yesterday on a B8.5 (registered Nov '14 so hopefully the later ones you refer to) Avant, trading in my S3 for it.
I've been eyeing the Avant for a while as I love my S3 but would like the extra space (I've got 2 girls, the older one just got a new bike), story came up on my newsfeed about an ABT tuned RS4 which got me thinking about the S4, quick Google search out of curiosity to see prices located one very near me for a decent price, view it next day and take it!
 
Brilliant - that is the crec engine one of the last great supercharged models you will
love it

I'm sure I will - isn't it turbo-charged though? Says V6T on the side of the car

EDIT: just looked up the specs - supercharged it is! Why put a T on the side then??

Audi just like to confuse, I think that they use “T” on any forced induction you definitely have a supercharger so no turbo lag just absolute instant response they are brilliant

Of course there are Supercharger badges available out there, even genuine Audi (US) ones.

The new S4 has fake exhaust pipe tips on one side, so putting V6T on the side of the B8 was one of Audi's lesser crimes :)

I'm 8 months into ownership of mine and still loving it every time I drive it (July 2015 plate).

As already mentioned low 30's are easily achieved on a motorway run and low to middle 20's around town (I'm approaching 60 so don't drive like a loony all the time now), even when I have a "play" it still returns mid teens.
 
As my avatar shows Mrs kids roof box to the alps averaged 30mpg. Best dad wagon for the money I reckon. Buy one then go to MRC.
 
Got a little worried today on first journey since picking the car up, circa 50 miles each way to Leigh on Sea and back. When I got there (tank was almost on full before I left), it was on 3/4, I was worried it would get to half by the time I got back, luckily it only went down a little the way back, still showing 245 miles range (290 when I left and I did 100 miles woop woop) :)
 
That's fuel gauges for you. They all seem to rush down from full, steady off in the middle, then quicken again towards empty. Not sure if it's the fuel tank shape or what.
 
Generally speaking you can put more fuel in than the gauge can register so full plus if you will. So from full plus the gangue won’t move much until it gets down to “just” full from which point it will report correct fuel drop.

Well.... a combination of factors are now at play lol

Mainly, work is a bit up and down right now, i work in professional motorsport industry, mostly F1.

I cannot be trusted with a 100bhp car let alone 300+!

I do alot of milage.

I DO need an estate, a diesel would be better but selling it on in a few years will be difficult as the man is making headway to phase out diesels but i will probably opt for a BMW 335D if im totally honest. Plenty about, Q car looks with a huge turn of speed.

With some funky remap software they are a flying machine. Sadly, they just look dull as F.
