Hi new to the forum, I’m getting really bad rattle-clunking noise, going over certain road surfaces, when driving over a cobbled road, it sounds as if something is loose and about to fall off, recently had new shockers fitted, noise was never there before shockers were fitted, had the car back in into the garage, had the new shocks replaced incase they were faulty, and car has been checked over 3,4 times & still no joy, has any one ever experienced anything like this before? It’s doing my head in!

One very common cause of rattling and creaking is the suspension strut top bearings. I can well believe that these might have been OK until the struts were removed to have the shocks replaced.

When I had problems with mine from new, I found that if I turned the wheels with the car stationary, I could hear creaking noises. With the bonnet up and my girlfriend turning the wheel, it was extremely obvious where the noise was coming from, in my case the driver's side top strut bearing. It was replaced under warranty and has been fine ever since.

Thanks for that, didn’t realise I had it in the wrong bit, the noise is coming from
The passenger side rear end, really frustrating. Mechanics have worked on it for good couple days & couldn’t find any problem.

As silly as it sounds, Have you checked the rear seats are locked in properly?

Exhaust heatshield?
That’s been checked aswell bud, looking like it’s a volume turned up job on radio being into the dealer 3,4 times and they are saying everything is sound underneath the car. They have had it out on test run with seats down listening to the noise, They can hear it but they don’t know where it’s coming from. Frustrating like.

Exhaust? Baffles rusted through and are rattling around inside the silencer?

One thing that is unbelievable until you experience it is silicones from waxes and car shampoos washing off into the door seals and causing them to squeak. First time I washed my A3 it went from being absolutely silent to sounding like the suspension was coming to pieces. Most long time owners on here have discovered the wonders of a German door seal treatment called GummiPflege which restores blessed silence again! :)

I’ve seen that on a few Old threads that’s popped up when I’ve been searching, I’ll give that gummipflege a try, I’m at stage where considering trading the car in early from my argeeement, as mad as it sounds just can’t deal with the noise. Bit ocd that way haha

Do you know if there Is a way I could possibly check this myself? Without having to go to the dealers?

they are plastic screwed on lumps underneath the car. More or less behind front wheel and in front of rear. They can come loose.
Just lie on ground and look for it, no need to jack it up. I wouldn’t lie underneath a car while on jacks.

Before you do that, you should consider what they might have had to take off to replace the shocks. At the very least the wheels would have had to come off. Where's the locking wheel nut socket? Rolling around on top of the spare wheel under the boot floor? Grab the exhaust tail pipes and give it a good shake, maybe they've dropped it off the hangers during the work and haven't put it back on properly or it's sitting in such a way that it's knocking against the chassis?
