Brake sensor

Hi

I have a question in relation to the brake sensor on my b8.5 S4.

The green light comes on, usually after going over a big bump or in the wet, when driving.

The pads have got about 70% left on them. I've checked. Now I know the sensor is on drivers side front and is just a piece of wire.

I haven't checked the connection yet as it could be that it's got wet or damaged.

But my question is, is it possible to change the sensor without having to remove the pads?

I'm happy to remove the pads but if I don't have to I'd rather not.

Any suggestions greatly recieved

I have the B8 and my brake pad light goes off every so often despite having lots of pad left. I can imagine its similar if not the same on the B8.5 but if you remove your wheel you can get to the cable and remove it without taking the pads out.

great thanks. i will have a look later on then as it's annoying it coming on every time I drive. it might well jsut be the connector but i will take a look and see. Thanks

Are you sure it's the brake pad warning symbol - I thought that was amber ?
Similar symbol on dash is the hill hold assist....which is green.

well i've waggled the wire about a bit but not driven anywhere since. Am due to go to the super market shortly so if it comes on will take a picture. The words definitely say brake pads though. but the symbol is green. Pics to follow.... the rear pads are full as well.

On the B8 the sensor is part of the pad and cannot be replaced on its own, you new pads. I’ve done my front pads and discs last week. Words of wisdom, don’t go with Brembo, the wire for the sensor is not long enough to go throug that rubber loop on the bleed nipple.

This is the dash warning that i get. Given it says pads i'm assuming it's the sensor being weird as the pads have loads on them. Unless this means something else?

Any suggestions as to whether this would be the sensor causing this?

As my post above I have that same warning light come on every so often despite my pads being full.
I have Brembo brake pads and these you can pull the wear sensor cable out and replace if needed. I actually did this at first as I thought it was a dodgy cable. Guessing my issue is another cable somewhere and yours could be the same.

Yeah. weirdly it seems to be triggered if you go over a big bump. The car is due a DSG service anyway so once lockdown is lifted i will be getting that done and will get them to look at the fault code for this when they do as i don't have a code reader device yet.

all i know is its annoying ha ha

I've used just a standard Carista OBD reader for fault checking and nothing comes up brake related, perhaps more advanced tools are needed.

So the break pad sensor is actually a loop that is interrupted when the brake disc grinds that. Could you not use a mulimeter to measure continuity and spot the faulty one?

I have had the same problem in the past and found that the wire for the brake pad wear indicator was damaged. I ended up splcing the wires together and the light then went out. TBH the wire for the brake pad wear indicator is really flimsy.

Thanks. Will have it looked at as it sounds like it should be fairly easy to sort with either a new wire or a bit of fiddling about.

Does sound like a sensor - using a multimeter to test continuity wont work as it's an intermitted fault.
This is the type of sensor you need - https://www.eurocarparts.com/search/106440138
Don't buy from ECP - you can grab them from ebay for a couple quid.
As suggested above you should be able to pull from pads without taking caliper off.

Other option is to unplug the sensor and short the two pins together. This will tell you if it's front or back.

I thought B8.5s only had sensors on the front drivers side? Or do they have them on the rears as well? The rear pads are also full mind so it's not down to them being worn if there is a rear sensor.

when i looked the other day i couldn't actually figure out how to undo the connector thats fixed to the hub. but then thats more me not turning the wheels before i jacked it up so i could really get a good view of the clip to see how to undo it without banging my head against either the hub or the inner wing. muppet! ha ha..

Good point - I was thinking about my A6 which has rear sensors. You will just have the one up front.
You should see the sensor from the top of the caliper (pad nearest the car).

thanks. maybe i was looking at the wrong thing that as what i was looking at went under the caliper. not near the top.
