Needing to get my haldex oil and filter done for my 57 plate pre facelift 170 quattro. I have noticed a humming noise going through my prop shaft under load.

Seen somewhere you can upgrade it to get 4 ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174196327169) whatever that means?

I don't think I have the tools/skills to do it myself but might buy the parts online (https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/vaico-transmission-filter-kit-504440731) and get a garage to fit it for me.

Any idea how much I should pay to have my haldex done?

Thanks

Cost 120 for my s3 8p so probably the same price parts included (oil and filter)

The humming is likely from the diff or rear donut - change the oil and filter as a starter and if it persists change the donut (AKS also sell). If it’s the diff then...

It just had a minor service to the engine oil and filter..

So is it a gen4 I need? Or does it depend on the age of the car?

Im not 100% sure but I think it will be a gen 2 haldex. A gen4 haldex is I think is just facelift a3’s. Mine is a 2009 facelift and has gen4.

As someone said above though your problem may be the rear doughnut where the prop meets the diff. It is rubber and goes hard over time so it doesn’t do it’s job in absorbing the vibrations of the prop shaft movement etc. Costs about £100 for a replacement. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401977208794

Thx,

Im hoping the noise might get less once I get the haldex done. My worry is if they start to fiddle with old parts other bits may brake and that would cost me a fortune

Gen 2 for yours. Gen 4 came > 09

Filter and oil is available from Haldex Repairs as per Dave’s post above.

when that rear doughnut fails it’s only usually noticeable at certain speeds/revs and/or causes vibrations through the car.

usually circa 2k-2.2krpm rpm on the diesels with the win happening at speeds above 60

just phoned Audi garage and they quoted me £100 for haldex oil and filter change. Why wouldn’t Audi replace the filter??

Make sure 100% wheni asked my audi at chingford they said the filter doesn't need tl be changed may be audi but you have dumb ***** that work there claiming its a lifetime fluid and isnt serviceable if u go with audi make sure you tell him.to keep the old filter as thatll provide proof that they've replaced it

Ask for a video to show it being removed from your vehicle showing the reg.

You have too much faith in them

Why wouldn't the replace it? Surely it doesn't take that much effort to replace it?

For the Gen4 haldex, (my 2011 S3) Audi didn’t even list the part number for the filter.

If it is a gen 2 haldex(pre facelift a3’s) then Audi do recognise that it has a filter so they will (or should) change it. If it were a gen 4 haldex(facelift a3’s) then they don’t recognise it has a filter so they wouldn’t change it.

Just got my pre-facelift a3 back from the garage - I was fuming to find out the filter wasn't changed after discussion with them in the morning to ensure they do the filter aswell!

Complained to the lady who was very rude who told me that the haldex filter is a fixed part and can't be changed - load of bulls****. I have taken this to audi UK as not happy at all - lets see what they say.

Is there a way to find out myself if I have a gen2 or a gen4 haldex? Mine is a 57plate a3 2.0 TDI quattro PD engine.

Yes, by clicking the link I provided to you a month ago.
Gen 2 filters and vehicle fitment: https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/shop/filters/generation-gen-2-filter-kit-vw-audi-seat-skoda/
Gen 4 filters and vehicle fitment: https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/shop/filters/generation-gen-4-filter-kit-vw-audi-seat-skoda/

Prt57 did warn you that they won't change the filter, you could have saved time and money going to an independent with the parts.
I hope Audi UK help you out, but i think it's unlikely. Maybe give your dealer a link to the website above to prove that they are removable parts and show them what they look like.

I was told the gen4 is what they wouldnt replace but they should be replacing gen2 filters - As I have pre-facelift a3 I thought i had a gen 2 - lets see what audi uk say

Doesn't matter if it's Gen 2 or Gen 4, the filter is there to do a job and like every other filter it needs replacing.
I was advised by a VAG Specialist that there is no interval for a fuel filter change either, so people don't have them done (I'm talking about my S3).I asked them to change mine and he assured me the one that was removed was fitted at the factory. 12 years and 103k miles on the same filter!
Sometimes you need to go to an independent or specialist, they are usually cheaper and a much better service experience.

Yeah in hindsight i should have just gone to a different garage. I will still put in a complaint against the garage as I was told I was getting haldex oil and filter done. This was a agreed over the phone when booking the appointment and when leaving the keys at the garage. The problem I find with audi is you don't actually get to speak with the master tech and have to deal with some half-wit receptionist who hasn't got a about servicing...

When you get it done, take the old one along and ask the receptionist if she knows what it is because it came off your car and you are worried.
When she says "No" and goes to find a technician, you can explain to them both that it is a filter for the Haldex and that it is clearly NOT a fixed part that can't be changed.
Make sure it's still oily so it leaves a mess for them to clean up.

Yeah that’s a good one, I just don’t like being lied to.. I hope she gets into trouble as I have raised this through customer complaints at Audi uk

Even the service book says to replace filter after 40 000 miles and oil every 20 000 miles
