Guys, I have an problem. Warning light for coolant too hot came on. Cooling fan is blowing also. There’s enough coolant, no leaks. When I look into the reservoir, with running engine, I see no movement in the coolant. Is that normal? Also since this happend, my oil temp stays below 70 degrees.

Also, when I feel the coolant in the expansion can with my finger, it’s not hot at all. Could this just be the temp sensor failing causing the fan to keep blowing? And is that the reason my oil temp stays low?

Could be dead water pump, some water way clogged or the sensor is bad. Warranty will cover, but you might be able to get them to replace if not since VW has the extension.

Yes my first thought was the water pump. But why is my oil not getting warmer than 70 degrees. I would think, if water is getting too hot, my oil would be hot too.

The oil is also cooled by the coolant so it probably is eventually just taking awhile since your having coolant system issues too.

Another probability is the sensors or plugs are not hooked up, however, you would be able to know with obd11/vcd in the engine module as it would throw an error.

Aha okay thanks! Do you know where I can find the temperature sensor?

Oil temp/level, I believe is on the oil pan.

Coolant temp I think is on the passenger side on the lower part of the radiator.

#3 & #7 is coolant temp, two of them.

Oil temp is #4.

But both oil and coolant you can easily check by scanning the engine module to see if they are bad.

Thank you very much, I will look into that! Do you know if it’s normal that I don’t see coolant moving in the expansion vat with running engine?

Why would you see it moving? The header is there to allow for expansion of the coolant as it gets hotter - and of course to make up any small losses, though there really shouldn't be any. So, no, it's not usual to see movement in the expansion tank

You're very welcome! You won't see anything moving as it's not in a direct water path. You'll only see it rise and lower depending on pressure built from temps.

Thanks for the answers guys! Any way how I can check if my waterpump is working?

Is the radiator hot top and bottom and does the heater work?

Your problem sounds like a coolant sensor to me. Does the fan come on before the oil gets to temp? 70 degC oil seems very cool for an engine up to normal running temp never mind overheating.

I just started the car, within one minute the fan started blowing. Tomorrow I will check if the heater works!
