Started the car earlier while still warm and low oil level warning? Checked dipstick and it is very low, right on the lower limit.

Booked in for a bit of work at r-tech on the 9th of April, including sump off/cleaned/pickup pipe changed etc etc.

So question is, should I leave it and not drive it until I go to r-tech or should I top it up and still not drive it until I go to r-tech?

(It’s annual service is due in 9 days/4400 miles and haven’t topped up since the service, receipt doesn’t say what oil was used. Just says ‘long life’)

check when cold.
if its low on the dipstick, it means you still have a lot in the sump. min and max on the dipstick is about 1 litre.
longlife is 5w30 vw504 spec.

happens to me every year. couple months before i service it, oil level will be nearer the min mark on the dipstick. just top it up and drive it.

Nice one, will check in a couple hours.
Thing is I’ve got millers 5w40 to replace this lot, so was hoping to avoid topping up on a different oil with more expense :/
I don’t really need the car at all cause I can use my van until April or should I just top it up anyway?

I thought longlife was 507.00 ? eg, Quantum Longlife 3

Stick a liter of cheap stuff in for a week or 2 no problems. As sam says min to max is 1 ltr, most people would top up a couple of times between annual services.

What do you reckon I should get? Might order from eurocarparts seeing as they’re still open

Anything given its just a few weeks, you can mix long life and std so just a 5/40, Halfords own is a good oil, used to be made by Comma

504 (petrol)/507 (diesel) are both long life. youll find both specs on the same bottle

id go tesco, get a 2l bottle of their 504 for £13 and use that. it meets the specs, itll be fine

Been a bit mad recently so hadn’t had time to order oil, is this right?

Bit late now ECP have closed the shops. Just buy some 5/40 from Tesco or ASDa

that oil isnt long life (its vw 502 which is 10k miles/1 year).
doubt itll make a difference if you mix them, but if you wanted to add similar to whats already in there, get vw 504.

How do you work out which is which? I couldn’t see anything with 502/504 on?

Go to Opie oils and put your Registration in: https://www.opieoils.co.uk/
Select any of the results and click on the 'specifications' and it lists the VW specs.
Your oil will also have a spec list on the back, and if it isn't in the Opie oils results page then it isn't the correct oil.

Eurocarparts site ain't the best so doesn't always say the spec and when it does its not always immediately apparant so you've gotta cross reference using Google.

5w40 won't be 504 anyway, 504 is available in 5w30 but not all 5w30s are 504. Just go tesco or asda. Tescos 5w30 vw504 is purple, asdas is pink

What a pain this is I’m in no rush anyway to get it filled as have no need for my car and doubt r-tech will still be servicing?

Which of those should I get? Not bothered about the price difference

Been meaning to order for ages...

I think they are are the same. The professional is an older model I believe and titanium is the newest version. Either would be fine.

As long as they are the correct VW spec then either should be fine.
If it's only a top up before you are able to get a full service when lockdown is over, then it shouldn't matter much anyway.

Oil expected to arrive by Wednesday, how long should I be gentle with the car before I can give it some big licks? Big, legal, essential journey licks

However long it takes to warm the car up? :tearsofjoy:

In all honesty I've never given the oil level a second thought. Assuming the oil is topped up to it's best level and the car is warm I'd go for as many legal essential journey licks as you can handle!

Perfect, I can’t wait
