Decided to go for a K&N filter, managed to find time to fit it yesterday. Quite impressed by the build quality, first time I've fitted one. Noticeable difference in sound and also surprisingly noticeable throttle response increase so chuffed really for such a simple job! (Yeah I popped one of the stickers on...)

they let the engine breath so much more than the standard item.

To me, that sticker on the air box was essential, in case a service garage will just chuck it away.

Don't forget to het yourself those cleaning/charging kits from K&N.
With your panel filter it is easier to clean it as you have to pressure wash it from inside out. I have a cylinder filter and it is a pita to clean it.

I also keep in the glive compartment that milage and cleaning record card.
Helps to keep track of it.

one word of caution, keep your old one as you may need something to fit whilst the K&N one dries , as they can take a little while.
when you clean it make sure it is fully dry before refitting and DO NOT over oil it as too much oil will block the mesh and restrict air flow , also allow oil to be drawn into the intake.

they don't tell you that in the instructions either.

Good point, I've chucked the old one now, but makes sense to have something spare to whack in whilst it dries, guess I'll just have to keep on top of the service record and grab a cheapie when it's coming up to cleaning time!

Might shave off 0.01 on a 0-60 but for filtration they're rubbish .

That's a bit harsh Gaz, I've had one fitted for a few years now and filtration has been fine , well depends on where you drive really if you drive around in really dusty parts then it may need cleaning more often , but not had any issues thus far.

if looked after and maintained correctly they are fine, well that's my experience and like we allways say, it is all down to personal choice.

I'm always harsh

When something is more open pore it flows better but doesn't filter better , you can't have both .

Do you have cone or panel , Rob ?

I have a K&N panel in my oem airbox , I ripped out the oem micky mouse internals of the airbox , all the foam had just perished anyway.
Oem airbox works very well with a decent free flowing panel filter.

I'd like to see a K&N panel filter unraveled and see how far 'Andrex' wise it unravels .

I've fitted one in the past, noticed no difference at all as a panel filter version.
I had a pair on a couple of SU carbs in the past and they did allow a bit better breathing and more intake roar.
They're expensive and just more hassle than a stock panel. Unless your car is heavily modded and the K&N is on show I really don't care the point.

The stock intake is more than enough for the RS4, pretty sure it'll flow just fine for my 4 pot.

All down to individual installations, I have one with a gutted oem airbox 034 HFC , 3" down pipe , larger intake pipe , and few otherbitswith a remap.
all works to get me 270, so in my case yes it does make a noticible difference.

Maybe they work better on petrol and in conjunction with your other mods.
As you say it's all down to the individual, by itself it's a high maintenance air filter.

I've used plenty of K&N filters on cars, bikes and aircraft. They are renowned for their improved airflow and like Gaz said tiny particle filtration is compromised. Is that a problem? Maybe over a long period of time but nothing that ever concerned me.
The biggest issue is people tend to fit and forget, especially the elements hidden inside the airbox, out of sight etc.

Ive had a long arm k&n induction kit on my accord type r that made a noticeable difference, i have the ecs induction kit on the b7 2.0t and it may be placebo effect but throttle response does seem smoother but its been put on due to top tuning experts advice when going up the stages, also had an open air box k&n mod on my aprilia rsv and that typically sees a good 8-10hp gain so to me you can keep your paper panel filters I'm sticking with the performance filters :)

8-10 hp from just an air filter?
Have you let K & N know that?

I sold the bike last summer but i put a decent amount of work into performance and when i went with the open air box mod and k&n it effectively doubles the air box size as you use the bottom of the fuel tank as the lid, at the same time your de restricting it, the bike was on and off the dyno numerous times but with the open air box which was one of the last mods i did (god knows why should of been the first) it picked up roughly 8-10hp mid range cant remember what it peaked at maybe 5, it was over a year ago now but either way in that case it was definitely worth doing over the stock filter.

Whether there are any gains to be had with an aftermarket intake is very application specific.

If the stock intake is restrictive, there can be gains to be had at or near stock.

If it'll flow well for a given power level, you probably don't need to change it until then.

The stock B7 airbox happily flows for a 420hp v8.

Quite often you're just moving power around. Socking great cone filter stuck on a drain pipe, slightly less restriction at 6500rpm, but lower intake air speed in the low and mid range.

The rs4 that makes about 50hp less than the claimed 414 you mean? Lol

I think it's time for this thread to go to bed chaps., maybe just agree to disagree.:icon thumright:

Ok, let's all show some love then.:couple inlove: , and the world need's it now.

Ah yes but unlike my ECS induction kit does it make a turbo flutter noise that makes me grin like a kid in a sweet shop

You should get the RS4 cover for the left hand side. And battery cover. Pretty cheap parts at the dealer and will finish that engine bay off nicely. The ecs intake looks tidy

The back kind of slips under the rubber seal and it just sits in there. You could make a bracket for the front but unless you’re driving around with the hood up, it’s not going anywhere!

Yeah I got mine from Audi. Same with the rain tray and battery cover. I can’t remember how much they were as it was about 4 years ago but I remember it was cheaper from Audi direct than anywhere else I could find

I went back through my emails it was in 2015.
These are the part numbers I ordered

Battery panel 8E2 819 447 01C
Battery insert panel 8E2 819 422 A 01C
Side cover 8E0 103 927 F

I paid $220 AUD for the lot. Which works out to about 5 quid at the moment

Is that the right cover for your model?
Part number says it's for a 4.2l. What does the front semi circular cut out go round?
Aren't these only made for the 4.2? Don't think any were made for the 2ltrs or TDIs. Cut outs for washer and pas fluid
