Next model A3

There are quite a few reports about the new A3 on 'Youtube'.

Looking at different videos I really like the flared fenders with no indents. A way more aggressive stance is achieved with those flared fenders and a lowered height than the 8V FL

My guess is that Audi will give discounts sooner than normal. My reasoning is the growing threat of corona virus. You only have to look up reports out of China. Their car buying market has dropped by 95% in the last six months. If this happens in the UK they won't be able to give them away. All manufacturers will be offering huge enticements to get people into their showrooms...Not good timing at all to launch a new model.

Factor in this new model not being to many loyal Audi buyers taste, cheaper materials & higher starting prices & Audi could be facing a difficult sell with this car. VW screwed up with the Golf on the outside, Audi have screwed up on that nasty interior. This could cost them big time with many owners turning to other brands who have moved things on.

That may well be. Fact is it isn't a good time to be any car builder.. Would you bother to go and buy a car while this virus is growing around us...I know I won't.

Also throw in EV; little demand for it imho yet they are forced to build them due to tightening CO2 regs and the 2035 date for the UK.

It’s your eyes that need testing mate. The Merc interior is miles better than what BMW and Audi are offering, where it falls down is the quality of some of the materials

Not the car for you then...stick with your B9 or do one over to Mercedes

I like it...the dash is an evolution and not an A35 AMG disaster and the back end of the hatch looks better and I like the new bonnet/grill design. The saloon should look even better.

Agree. This if they'd gone down the IPad stuck on the dashboard look of the Merc, that would have killed the A3 for me.

Lots of pros and cons on the interio. The cons (plastic, cheap etc.) are based on some pretty **** photos/videos. The proof in the pudding is go and see one in a showroom and then make your judgement call. It is the same thing for a colour of a car, you have to see it. Frankly, I like the integrated dash look with good forward vision, no stuck on IPad, and the vents are OK.

My S3 is in for service today and I have a 19 plate Q3 Sport Courtesy Car and to be honest the touchscreen dash is alright - It all blends in nicely and the A3 looks slightly slicker as well - Yes it's covered in fingerprints but that is the way all the cars are going because the younger generation expect it, so you just have to roll with it or buy something older I'm afraid.

Our old pool car - Mercedes A Class (before the new dash) had fingerprints all over that Ipad screen which wasn't even touch sensitive anyway but people used to get in and start poking at it.

Is there a rule that only folks that own, want or have ordered the new A3 can chat about it? I must of missed that rule, have you got a citation?

its a discussion ABOUT the new dogs dinner A3, you do not have a monopoly on discussion i am afraid, as much as Audi may like you to considering you’ve admitted you would pay for the air inside your wheels if Audi charged you for it.

I work in car manufacturing, the last 18 months to two years have been bad, this is just another blow, especially if a lot of your market is in China and your other components are from China. Bad times indeed to be in manufacturing IMO.

Agreed, I like how they’ve taken some inspiration from the original Quattro

If it was ‘water off a ducks back’ why are intent on repeating yourself as if you ensure your ‘point’ has more relevance than anyone else's? That mindset is not really part of the structure of that phrase.

Where anyone ‘was’ when this thread began has of no relevance to open opinion based discussion, we aren’t in a dictatorship with you as supreme leader i am afraid.

Yes Tech moves on, but just because touch screen, doesn’t mean you cannot just use the wheel...oh yeah, Audi got rid on that...Doh! Never touched my M40i screen once since purchase in May 2019, just use iDrive (or voice if I could be bothered which I am not)

Not in my case mate, I still have an RS3 in me. It is the usual thing with new models, people hate them, then attitude softens (or not) but as you say, if not for anyone then they move on. I personally am not wedded to a manufacturer, so next car could be from a number just depends what’s on offer and whether it ticks my boxes.

Keyboard warriors...always

Nah, I’ll stick with my 6 cylinder M140i thanks.

I wonder if the gearbox is still as laggy as it is on other Audis?

Hello All,

I have not been here for a while and I still have my 2014 8V. I have been waiting to see what this new model would be like and here are my thoughts:

I like the external look with the improved body and I think it looks good from petty much every angle. I particularly like the new lights. It's clearly an evolution rather than a revolution and to be quite honest, I don't think that's a bad thing. 'If it ain't broke, then don't fix it". I'm not sure on the alloy wheel designs as yet but we'll know more in due course. Sadly, I can't share the same praise as far as the new MK8 Golf is concerned. I like an understated look but I'm sorry to say that the VW is really rather dull in my opinion. The new A3 is streaks ahead in this regard.

As for the interior... well, where do I start. I have to say that it is one fugly looking thing. Those air vents either side of the steering wheel look nasty. I know like everything it's subjective, but at the risk of sounding like a dinosaur, this is an example how to completely ruin the pleasant and understated interior of the existing model (8V). It's all over the place. I appreciate manufacturers have to move with the times and appeal to the 'youth' of today, but having a 'touchscreen only' interface (voice and multifunction steering wheel controls aside) is a big no from me. I don't have an issue with touch screens so long as you still have the option to control the interface via buttons or a rotary controller. BMW have maintained this setup with both the new 3 series (Dad has the new M340i xDrive) and the new 1 series. One of Audi's biggest mistakes in recent years is to dispense with the rotary controller.

Don't get me wrong the 8V (pre FL / VC) was in need of a technological upgrade and from that point of view, I don't have an issue. It's just the way it's been implemented and executed that I take issue with. Some would say that the pre-facelift 8V interior is showing it's age, but it still works for me. No annoying fingerprint marks on the screen and I can put it away when it's not needed. Plus I can operate the infotainment system via the buttons/rotary controller without taking my eyes of the road. I've used it for 6 years and it's become second nature. Now do that with a touchscreen?

As for the interior quality, it's hard to tell from photographs and videos, and I will need to see it in the flesh. The seats do look very good though. It will be interesting to compare it to the 8V. I only had mine serviced a couple of weeks ago and still thought "What a nice place to be sat in!". I just wish I had VC.

I note from launch that there seems to be no 1.8 TFSI Quattro / 2.0 TFSI Quattro (Non S3) equivalent available (sorry, I still use the old engine size designations as I find this easier than Audi's 'New' terminology). I suspect that this is due to Audi rationalising its line-up and/or due to the take-up of these particular power-trains (less popular than the 1.0/1.4/1.5 COD in the UK?), plus WLTP. Unfortunately for me, this means there is no newer direct replacement for my 1.8 TFSI Quattro 8V, thus my only option if I were to get the new model would be the S3 which I don't really need.

I will go and have a look at the new model once it's in the dealerships but based on the interior, tech interface, and the 'launch' engines. I'm not changing my 8V yet. Of course, over time my opinion may change, however I'm afraid it's looking like something from Bavaria will be on the cards next.

I appreciate that others may have views that differ from my own and if you like everything about the car then great. Just my two-pence worth.

I test drove an A35 AMG. Initially the tech looked fantastic. But after a couple hours, the novelty wore off. Much preferred the interior of my S3 when I got back in it.

Impressive, but not for me.
