After a conversation with ch1z64 he suggested that I post my plea for help here. I purchased the car about 2 month ago and I am very contented with it. The car (according to the dealer who did the timing belt last month)) is an 01/09/2006 A3 T Fsi S Line Special Edition Hatchback 2.0 Automatic Petrol. My problem is that nobody so far including the previous owner who had it for 5 years nor the garage could tell me what the UWO is for. The only thing the garage said was that it must have been retro fitted. ch1z64 suggested that I upload some pics of the light switch and wiper switch and I therefore throw myself at your mercy. Please ask for any further info if required to solve my problem. kind regards from a frustrated Newbie.

Can't you just work out where the cables are going and take it from there?

Is there any name, brand or a model stated on it you could google up?

Looks like some sort of sensor.
Either light or rain sensor as they are typically mounted to a windscreen.
Try covering it to see if darkness triggers the lights to come on, or pour water on it to see if the wipers come on?

Looks like an older GPS/antenna for a tracking device - there must be a brand or part number on it somewhere. Did you trace the wires back?

Thanks everyone for your responses. The suggestion for a rain or light sensor seems to fail when I was told that I would require a different wiper /light switch to accommodate this. The GPS option may not hold water as I do not have any sat/nav capabilities. The DAB aerial may be favourite as I do not appear to have any exterior antenna yet I have a good radio signal. Surely no one would install such a hideous extra ? I'll attach a pic to see if that stirs anybodies memory. Once again thanks for the info.
Sorry but I messed and doubled the pics.

So certainly nothing oem - and yes the light/rain sensor is a red herring... that windscreen tinted band isn’t standard either.

What headunit is in there? Standard Audi?

Thanks for your response. I have the above radio installed and believe that this is the original Concert model. Would it be more informative if I remove the radio and submit a pic of what is hiding behind? Your comment about the windscreen tint is also very interesting as you were the only one to comment on it. The car also has electric mirrors but not windows! I have since had a sunstrip added which covers the UWO without any side effects whatsoever but I would still like to find out its original purpose. Kind regards to all.

It won't be a DAB receiver for that stereo, so maybe the previous owner had an aftermarket DAB unit that was removed.
It may also be an opener for a garage door or security gate.
Ultimately, I doubt it's any use to you so either ignore it and enjoy the car, or remove it and solve the mystery. Personally, I'd have forgotten about it by now.

I agree it will be of little use whatever it once was.. it’s only going to be held on with double sided 3M tape I would guess to could probably be prised off if it is annoying... then cables traced from under the headliner and down one of the a-pillars to wherever it is plumbed in.

Removing it might solve the mystery of what it’s for, following the wire should lead you to whatever it’s plugged into or give an idea of what it was for
