S3 Coolant light?

I’ve got a 68 plate S3 and whilst on my way home ten minutes ago, the check coolant warning light came on and then went off. It did it again a few minutes later and went off again!

Pulled in and looked at the coolant tank and it was below min but the engine had been running but couldn’t see any sudden leaks or anything of the sort.

I’ll check it again in the morning but has anyone ever needed to top up coolant on a relatively new car? I had a Golf R previously for the 3 years and never topped it up either.

Could it be a spurious warning light?

If the water level is below the minimum level, it will set the warning light off, add some coolant to bring up to between minimum and maximum line.

I need to add some water maybe very 6 months, I've already had the water pump replaced, if you search this forum, leaking water pumps/thermostat housings is a common problem on the S3 , as it was on my old mk6 GTi as well.

My mechanic said there has been 9 revisions to water pumps since the My15 models.

I’ll have a look this morning now it’s cooled and see where it’s showing.

I’d heard about the issues but I thought that they’d been resolved on the 17/18 plate cars?
Or at least that’s what I’d heard.

Just in case, is it still VW G13 for these?

My 2017 S3 saloon had the issue (leaking thermostat). Get it booked in and sorted under warranty

Is there any visual sign of leaks I could check for first? Or is it a slight weep and not really noticeable until the low level warning light.

I suppose it varies from car to car , only knew due to the low coolant warning and Audi inspected and it was a leaking thermostat. If your cars under warranty I wouldn't be worried about taking it in, it's a common fault and should be easy to fix.
