Hi all,

I'm looking to get my cambelt replaced as it's getting near to 5 y/o. I've got a quote at the dealers at £595 and they throw in FOC MOT's for the life of the vehicle. Is this a rip-off and I'd better go to an indie or is worth it? I'm curious to see what prices you guys have paid.

Cheers,

Dan

That's a fixed price charge with Audi. I'd try a indie and see what they come up with....I think £300 with an indie!

Edit* Did they mention a waterpump as well?

I spoke to both a dealer and an independent and they both advised to do the water pump at the same time.

Audi did my belt and water pump and got free mot for life. Think it was just over £600 good deal aa it has passed mot last 3yrs now

Didn't we have this discussion the other day and concensus was that our engine doesn't have a cam belt?!

£300-325 at AMD Tuning in Essex with water pump.

Got my timing belt done under warranty a few months ago. The water pump is electric and not driven by the belt.
They said the pump should last 140,000 miles.
Skoda dealers take around £500 for belt change.

Sorry, can’t remember, but just over £300 I think.
So about half the price, are MOT's going to cost you £300 for the time you have the car???

If it were me I'd use the indie.

Yeah I know, but we are talking Audi! They don't clean the filter when they do a haldex service, the indie does!

Hmm.. can the indie update the online records tho? I'm thinking I'll get a better price at the future sale if the car has full service history?

Yes they can update the online service record if they have access to Erwin. Some good indies do.

You can also take your receipt to an Audi dealership and have them update it. They will huff and puff about it though.

As you can see from my last service, updated on the same system as Audi use:

Oh I sold my S3 with a 'Unit 20' service history for exactly the same price as if it had an Audi service history. A sports car specialist bought it off me and paid £1,500 more than Audi had offered in a px.

As long as they use genuine Audi parts and do what needs doing at the time all is fine.

Considering using Unit 20 not too far from me are they a good garage ..

My dad uses Unit 20 and is very happy with the service he receives...he would rather go there than an Audi dealership, I would too if I lived in that area.

Cheers guys, thanks all for the replies.
Called today to ask if the £595 quote is including the water pump, and guess what? It wasn't!!! The price with the w/p replacement was quoted at £745 at the nearest two stealerships. WTH!?!? This is a ripoff IMHO!
Also, the lady at the dealers said that the indie CANNOT add anything in the service history as it's only doable by Audi. I think this is BS as the indie has told me before that they can add to the history. I'm still waiting for the quote from them, however.
In the bottom line, what is an acceptable price for this work do you think?

Thanks guys,

Dan

Oh! Forgot to mention that one dealer said they do the work by default with the water pump included as it may leak in the future and if it does then you have to change the lot, and the other one said the tech will check the pump and will say if it needs changing or not (but she could not guarantee it will not leak until the next replacement, of course :)) )

Have you actually read this thread Dan? :)

The indie just emailed me: £564, the bits plus 5 1/2 hours of labor! That's a bit different than yours @Dubjam.
I guess I have to suck it up!

I think that proves my point when I initially said "Did they mention a waterpump as well?", take nothing for granted with Audi! :D

Yes mate very good, Martin is the only person I'd let touch my car. I also got him to fit 2 new tyres on the front when needed, he guaranteed the alloys wouldn't be damaged and they weren't! ;) Decent price as well.

I think more know him on the RS forums, people from all around the country visit him to have work done.
Whilst I was there a guy said Audi had quoted over £1,000 for a new Turbo, Unit 20 fixed it for under £200!!!

Another question, I couldn't find a related topic but I'll post here I hope it's ok.
Does anyone know what's the schedule for replacing the alternator belt? I think I can hear a slight whine noise in the area where the belts are so I might have to replace this too. I've been reading online and apparently it's the alternator pulley which does that. any thoughts?
Thanks

Are you sure it could not be the belts. Stiff belts in cold damp weather do make a noise, although more of a squeel.

I don't know exactly what's causing it, I find it curious that most of the garages I've asked quotes from didn't mention the accessory belt at all and the ones which did only want to replace the belt, not the rolls. I know if a roll fails it'll knacker the belt even if new.

On the 1.4 is the water pump at the gearbox side and not connected to the belt ? So why change?
