Hi folks.

I've been a ling time member since looking for an Audi A4 some years ago which fell through as the wife changed her mind (again). Recently she moved out and started her own life with someone else, but that's a really long story and not quite relevant here. What is relevant is she took the car with her...

So, now I have the need for another car and I've been looking at either an A5 or Q5. I'd like the A5, but the Q5 is more practical and could be used if my other works vehicle (Skoda Yeti) is off the road for any reason.

Budget is going to be up to £10k, and age / plate will have to be 2007 - 2011 ish. Also, only considering the 3.0ltr TDI engine, not petrol or 2.0ltr TDI.

The Q5 is only automatic but the A5 could be had in a manual which would be preferred I guess. Which sort of brings me to the main point of the post.

Sellers invariably have no idea which auto gearbox is in the car they're selling, and list it as simply Tiptronic. I presumed (possibly incorrectly) that Tiptronic simply means you can manual shift the auto box, and doesn't relate to the actual type of auto box fitted. Some (all the Q5's apparently) are listed as S Tronic which I know to be the 7 speed DSG box, but in the years I'm interested in can anyone shed any light as to which other gearboxes were fitted?

Cheers in advance.

3.0 TDI, all engines with the engine code CAPA are 6-speed manual. CCWA can be a manual or 6 speed auto. After 2010 it'll be 7-speed S-tronic. The Q5's can only come as S-tronic.

So pre 2010 A5 will be a 6 speed auto, not possible to get an S Tronic til then? And won't be the famed multitronic?

Multironic is only available in front wheel drive versions, the power output of the engine is usually 204 ps or bhp. Specifically its after May 2010 when the s-tronic came.

I would go fir a 3.o tdi s-tronic. The gearbox is really good, maintenance can be expensive if you need to change the oil/filter but that doesn't need done often, mine was actually listed as 'sealed for life' but I was advised it's best to change it anyway about 100k, mine had done 135k when I bought it, oops! The S-tronics are capable of taking much more power than the manuals which surprised me but is apparently true, so that's the one to have if you plan any tuning. Standard trim they are great engines anyway, I did a bit of work on mine myself and it was quite good to work on, mostly everything on the top in the 'V' even the turbo, that's with me coming from an A3 right enough where they are crammed in down the back.

I don't want an S Tronic. Two reasons, they're gonna be out of budget unless they're galaxy starship miles, and they're too problematic. You only need to look at service history of so many A5 S Tronics, and they have "Gearbox serviced recently" in the specification. Alarm bells ring straight away, faulty mechatronics unit, give it a service, makes no difference, sell the car.

Quick update. I bought one. But I can't show any pics, the forum won't allow it.
