Hi guys,

Just a quick question, does the 2016 Audi S3 have a timing belt or chain? Audi website says belt however the parts team seem to think it’s a chain.

Does anyone have a definite answer?

Cheers,

Cheers for the quick response, glad it’s a chain as I believe the belt needs to be changed every 100k or 5 years and this is a £500/600 job at the dealer

Yeah I’ve had times when I’ve gone to the dealers and their own service advisors don’t know if it’s chain driven and then tell me that I need a belt change.

Since it’s a cam chain I assume it lasts the life of the engine right?

Also on the AUTODOC app when looking for parts the cam chain comes up but a “drive belt” also comes up, what’s this for?

Providing the car is maintained and serviced to the manufacture guidelines, it should last the lifetime of the engine.

Not sure what belt the app is referring to but the EA888 engine is used across multiple models within VW group and it’s definitely chain driven.

Ok thanks, I’ll be sure to get it serviced at my local dealer then.

Thanks for the help :)

TDI is belt. TSI is chain.
