I've got a 2017 S3 DSG which I've owned from new and I'm getting about 12000 miles per tyre, this doesn't particularly worry me but is it typical?

I drive the car fairly quickly but not racing, the wear is even all around and the tracking is exactly to Audi spec.

I've also got a 2002 TT which I drive in a similar way but I get about 20,000 miles per tyre.

The S3 has currently got Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 tyres.

The S3 is an excellent car - very quick and fairly economical.

Thanks.

Just FYI I managed 8500 on my last set of Pirelli P zero's. Audi reccomend changing all 4 at the same time, I had a little bit of life left on the rear but not much. I find the S3 gets through tyres faster than any other car I have had!

I got 13,000 miles out of my Conti’s that I had on my original S3 from new, they had 2mm left. Front tyres do wear quicker than the rears as the Quattro isn’t permanent.

I’d been told previously you’re only allowed a max of 3mm tolerance per axle but Audi do recommend changing front and rears at the same time.

I managed 23k out of my first set of Pirelli P zero's, the second set lasted considerably less.

When you do change them, do all 4 at the same time. My rears didn't need changed at the same time as the fronts, but I was back two days later to get them changed as the car just didn't feel right.

rotate the tyres front to back to get even ware out of them, i do it once a year on every car i ever had.

I managed 23k from the original P zeroes and they had around 3mm left on the rear, fronts got changed and had done 15k miles and had around 4.5mm-5mm iirc, that was on a FL S3 Saloon

Original Continentals lasted 19k miles. Dunlop Sport Maxx lasted me 23k miles.

The Dunlops have been consistently over 20k miles on the last 4 or 5 audis i have had.

When I had the S3 (manual) I sold it with the original tyres on @17,500 can't remember what tyres were on it.
This A5 coupe s-tronic I changed the fronts at 2mm with 7,000 on the clock! It's running Continentals which are good for grip but bad for wear!

It also depends on the types of journeys you do as well, long rolling ones will get you more miles than short stop/start ones.

Currently on a minimum of 5mm all round at 7200 miles from new with Pirelli P Zero.
As said wear is all relative to car/tyre/driving style.
I am very gentle on tyres but was shocked at the wear on my previous car(Civic Type R/Continental) which wore at the rate of 1mm per 1000 miles. :frowning:

I’m in the US with a PFL 2016 S3 with the 235/35/R19s.
The original P-Zeros were awful - got about 8,000 miles out of those. As soon as the temperature dropped below 40°F/5°C, they’d literally fall apart from slow speed stuff - like parking...
Not sure if they’re available in the UK, but I went with the Continental DWS06 all seasons in the same size and over here they’re AO. I’m currently at 26,000 miles with the tread between 7/32” and 8/32” on all 4 (new is 10/32”). Just as good a tyre as the P-Zeros IMO and grippy in anything. Got a small bulge on one from a pothole, but tread wise they’re awesome compared with the stock.

Did you write that correctly?
It's just that a brand new tyre has around 8mm of tread.

so that will be new 5/16" replace at 1/8" sorry but work in a machine shop . why don't people round down to lowest denominator.

The age old tale that Haldex “doesn’t provide power to the rear until slip is detected at the front” is a myth that hasn’t been the case since about 2006. The coupling is almost always supplying torque to the rear axle.

More relevant to tyre wear differing between axles is the chassis set up, the fronts still do all the steering and most of the braking, and carry c.60% of the cars weight.

My S3 hatch did 23k before I sold it. It was still on it’s original tyres, but they were definitely due for replacement. Front to rear wear was even, but I did regularly rotate the tyres to keep it even,

Sorry - the result of being a Brit living in the US now - 7/32” and 8/32”. New was 10/32”. Replace at 4/32”.
Nope, sorry that was gibberish. :D
My point was how can a tyre that's covered 26000 miles have virtually the same tread remaining as a brand new tyre?

Can anyone confirm if it’s cited by Audi anywhere to replace all 4 tyres at the same time on a 4wd car (S3) or what the max difference in tread should be?

20k on my toyo proxies and still a few thousand miles left. I'd not get these tyres again though. They were great on my old 3.2 quattro but not so great on this car.

Just about to hit 20k on the original Pirelli’s. Must be my driving style but rears always wear slightly quicker on my last 3 quattros. Not much but fronts are just over 3mm, rears sat around 2.5mm

^This. I do it when I switch back from my winter wheels. I’ve just picked up an S3 with 14k on it, all 4 corners at 6mm so I assume it’s a second set, so probably the previous owner got around 12k out of the first set of P Zero’s. Thankfully 19” tyres for the S3 are half what I was paying on my old A6 LeMans.

S3 isn't really economic :) I would say medium
