Picked up my new A3 on Saturday and loving it. However there is one thing I miss which my A1 had... a right side footrest for when you're using cruise control! It'd be quite handy for hold assist too now

Absolutely; right side footrest probably the only thing I miss (apart from all the boot space) from my Skoda Octavia, which had them both sides.

I never even knew a right foot rest existed on any car. :D
It is inexcusable not to have a left one though.

If a car has any form of CC or ACC it seems logical that it should provide somewhere to put your right foot other than resting on the gas pedal.

I love cruise control and use it all the time. :) I just place my right foot on the floor or draw my leg back a bit or to the side.
I've never experienced any car with a right foot rest, but I suppose it depends on whether there is available space in the foot well to fit one.
I may well find it a good thing and use it if I had one....but can't help feeling it is a solution to a problem that does not exist.
They do say though that you only miss something when you no longer have it. :D

I collected my 2019 35 sport 9 days ago. Just back from a near 600 mile return trip to Devon and a few observations.
1 - I do not like the Xenon headlights. The distance projected and spread is not good. In fact on country lanes unless you use main beam you have blind spots when turning.
2 - After about 200 miles my bum hurt, the seats are not as supportive as my 2014 Yeti, although I must admit they were the best seats I have had in car ownership of over 35yrs.
3 - The engine is starting to loosen up all ready and once revs are lifted to over 2K pick is good and I'm surprised at the turn of speed, especially "around the legal limit".
4 - Boot usefully bigger than expected.
5 - General feel of quality to the cabin is very nice, with must plastics soft to the touch.
6 - I'm finding it difficult getting used to the MMI, or whatever you call it, as at times it's not very intuitive. Hopefully Ill get used to it before my long summer drives
7 - First tow planned in about a month, again the 600 mile return trip so hopefully will go well as engine looser and me more used to the car.

Colin

- the tranny programming in comfort is too aggressive at upshifting to maximize economy. the TFSI just doesn't have the tq at 1500rpm to move this car so it's slow to react when making changes. I got Unitronic TCU tune to solve this.

- the rear suspension is a bit squidgey over bumps (tends to wiggle). this could be a result of soft rubber bushings in the rear control arm

- the fuel mileage is not impressive for a 2.0T. I'm getting about 10L/100km driving reasonably in 50/50 city/highway with the 6 spd DSG.

Hi new to this i have reduced the wind noise from passenger side after trying everything its coming from the wing mirror went to BnM superstore got clear self adhesive protectors placed 4 under my mirror and 4 in the inside near the window could hear noise at 40-60mph after applying the adhesive protectors dont get noise till 80mph now so they have helped going to find somehing black that blends in to my wing mirrow and long term onlay had car from 31th jan right off showroom floor got it had wind noise from day 1 will post a few picture of what did if folk are still having same problem many thanks

Wind noise is not something that has ever bothered me.

Annoying and intermittent squeaking and rattling from under the dashboard in my 2.5 year old A3 is disappointing to say the least.

No memory seats, no memory seats, no memory seats... it’s retarded that the super sports seats are manual, and even more retarded that it has no memory seats option regardless seat type.. Golf 7 at least has the option in some European countries...

Progressive steering.

Having used manual steering, hydraulic power assisted steering, normal electro-mechanical steering without problems, with progressive I have a tendency to have over adjusted by the end of a corner, and I am a late apex kind of person anyway.

Stupid "Boost" gauge in place of the water temp gauge which was a much more useful bit of kit. What performance car dosn't have an engine temp gauge?

my mk1 8L Audi S3 has a right footrest. Maybe it’s not officially a “footrest” but it’s so comfortable when using cruise control. In the 8V S3 there’s no space at all! I have to rest my foot under the floor of the pedals (I know it’s a bad habit and I don’t do it if motorway is busy) but it annoys me no end!

The mk1 S3 has a third foldable mini sun visor behind the rear view mirror. I miss that on the 8V.

I hate the fact all the S3 badges in my FL car are designated just S instead of S3. Ive already replaced the steering wheel badge!

I don’t like the fact virtual cockpit brightness doesn’t auto change. At night I have to push the button, wind it down, then push the button back in. Then when I next drive in the daylight, I have to do the opposite.

I always drive with the sat nav screen inside the dashboard. Every time I start the engine, it pops up again and I have to push the button to hide it again. I wonder how long it will be before the motor or gears wear out...

My mk1 S3 has proper flared arches meaning the wings are different from other models in the range. Now, people can make replica S3 or RS3 models by just changing bumpers and grilles.

The front door pockets in the 8V S3 have no felt lining to stop things rattling around. The mk1 8L had felt in. Another annoyance...

Despite all this, the 8V is a damn good car for a daily. It’s fun, practical and looks great. But I’ll never sell the original :)

What you describe about the brightness seems strange. The different dashboard brightness you have set should be individually remembered for when the lights are off and on....this is how it has worked with previous cars I have owned and how it works with my Audi, although I don't have virtual cockpit.

The MMi screen if turned off by pressing and holding the volume button so that it retracts will permanently stay off on my car until I choose to bring it back up again.
Like yourself I don't always use it so would rather not have it sliding up and down with every ignition cycle.

It auto changes in my Q2 which I would have thought is the same VC as the A3? When I go into a Tunnel and the lights come on then the VC dims and then when I hit sunshine or daylight again then it goes brighter again. I can physically see it adjusting to the daylight during the day too so it’s not just light or dark mode.

Thanks chaps, I’ll read the book of words regarding the VC auto Brightness. Maybe mine is switched off. Also thanks for the tips regarding turning the MMI off.

Agree, I know a car has came on boost because I can feel it :racer: I like to warm my cars up to 80/90 degrees before flooring it.

Sorry I'm replying to your post late but just read it when a notification popped up,,,,,,,,,,,,Why the word retarded ? What do you mean ?

Four years ago the thermostat failed open on my two year old A3 1.8tfsi. The only indication I had of the problem was the water temp gauge which is replaced by the "Boost" gauge on the S3. Should this problem arise with my present car I would be in the dark. The thermostat was replaced under warranty at a cost of £680!!!! Anyone remember the old days when you undid three nuts on top of the engine block, replaced the thermostat in ten minutes, and it cost about thirty bob?

30 bob - crikey! Wasn’t the thermostat at the top of the radiator in those days?

YES, and you didn't need to run a diagnostics for it either.

Thermostat was always situated in a domed cupola held on by three nuts on the top of the cylinder head closest to the radiator. Still fitted to cars up to the early 2000's. Last one I fitted to the wife's mini late 90's and if my memory serves me well think I paid about £1.60. Ten minute job. The A3 thermostat (electronic) plus associated bits cost £460 and then £220 labour, that was four years ago!!

My post was tongue in cheek - 30 bob is back in the British Leyland / Datsun days. (or maybe even before Datsun)

Anyway, time to get back on topic.

Dislike the fact that my current S3 on order didn't have the advanced key option, having owned a 13 plate 2.0 td sportback from new its going to take some getting used to using that key, i know I'm gonna be dissapointed when she arrives. if only i had the extra spare 10k for the RS3

I have the virtual cockpit and the water and fuel gauges are built in to the dash surround, and the boost and oil temp gauges are displayed in the LCD of the virtual cockpit. Does a non VC equipped S3, not have a water temp gauge? That’s an odd decision!

Have Audi stopped the keyless entry due to car thefts etc? I must say, since getting mine with keyless entry I’m paranoid it’s going to be nicked so I bought a Stoplock, just in case.

when i ordered the car in sept the salesman gave me that patter about audi dropping the keyless entry, but thats a load of *****. its still available on the RS3 and will no doubt will be available on the new A3 this year

getting naked could be an issue as I've seen a device that clones the keys but ya just got to add extra security to slow the them down

VC doesn’t display that the indicator is on in any way, this along with the indicator tick being so quiet means it’s easy to miss it hasn’t auto deactivated. Generally when overtaking.

It does at the top part doesn’t it?in the part above the VC screen itself? If you put the steering wheel down low then it is hard to see. Also, the A3 also has the extra little marker on the mirror that shows the indicator!

Was about to comment the same thing, at least this is how it works on the S5 VC and can't imagine it's wildly different.

I will have to check :hopelessness:

I thought there is no way this can’t be there but maybe I’m actually being that special lol.

No temp gauge on S3 just the pointless boost gauge (in my opinion anyway) - Apparently you will get a warning before it overheats and ruins the engine - well possibly!!

You were correct lol. Steering wheel has now been moved up slightly.

A £7 RFID pouch off Amazon will solve that problem, my S3 didn't have keyless entry but my AMG and GTI TCR do, just a case of putting your car key in the pouch when you get home.

And do periodically check your pouches work by trying to open a door with the keys still in it.

The pouches do wear out and stop working. I had one stop working after ~5 months.

But what indication do you get if the thermostat fails open? My car was picked up by trailer to return to dealer, I was told on no account the car should be driven.
