Radio won't stay mute on restart

I can't quite work out if the radio is supposed to come on every time you start the car, or if I am missing something? If I mute my radio or media and shut off the car, when I come back to the car and re-start music will be playing. Seems the only way around this is selecting a media source that won't play (like aux) before shutting the car off. Weigh thing is that if I mute, and then immediately re-start it stays muted, but If I wait a few minutes it will come back on. There doesn't seem to be any sense to it. Am I missing something?

2 things going on here.
The mmi goes into a sleep mode for a while so it can restart quickly. In your case a quick on and off the mmi remembers you were in mute. Similar to a pc going to sleep/hibernate.
When you leave the car for a while the mmi does a full restart and will forget that you were in mute and goes back to the volume you were in before you muted and with the same source, ie radio, cd etc.
Mute is a temporary measure and not the same as you winding the volume all the way down so expected that the mmi doesn’t remember. Similar to other cars I’ve owned.

so winding down the volume until it mutes should be remembered on re-start?

As above, or just turn radio down to lowest value.

If you turn off the MMI it will remember that between restarts but that is a bit drastic. (Press and hold the volume button till it says ‘entertainment off’

Another option is to download a silent mp3 track and set it to repeat track. You can find one on iTunes Store. I think it’s called ‘A A a very good song’ or something like that.

So there is no way to turn off the radio without turning off the MMI, or selecting a source that has no music? That's mad.

Struggling to see a problem here.
what is it you are trying to achieve?
Why do you need to turn the radio off? Is there a reason you want to get into your car and have nothing on? As said you can turn the volume down.
I like getting in my car and the music is where I left off last time I drove it and more or less at the volume I left it.

Most of the time I want silence in my car, not radio or music. I just want to listen the exhaust note (RS3) and hear myself think. It seems mad to me that it won't remember that the music is muted or have someway to turn Audio off without losing all the other MMI functionality. Guess the only way is setting media to AUX. Surprising more people aren't complaining about this. Does everyone listen to music or radio all the time?

Just press the small chrome volume turn wheel beside the transmission lever to turn the audio system off and press again when you want audio.

Yes of course, but my point is that it does stay muted the the car is re-started.

So you just want the car to be muted when you start. Don’t think there’s a function for that.
My old golf used to have a setting in the sounds so you can set the start up volume but don’t see it in the Audi. Maybe vcds or an engineering menu.

Is it not odd to anyone else that you have no option to not hear music playing on start up though?

Pop a CD in, switch the source to CD and then remove the disc? Might work. The really daft thing with Audi's MMI is that if you turn it all the way off you have no clock!

most of the time there’s a big enough delay for the mmi to start I’m half way out my street before the music starts.

there’s a clock in the vc or dash.

there’s a clock in the vc or dash.

Only if you have that cluttered page selected that has too much info on it. Then you decide to use cruise control and where does the selected set speed get displayed? Where the time was, that's where!

I still do not get what you want??? Your thread states Radio won't stay mute on restart.
Just press press the volume button prior to shutting off the engine, it will be muted on restart.

it will be muted on restart

As I read the OP, that does not work on their car, and the radio comes on when they restart the car even if they have muted it before turning off.

That does not happen on my car, so I wonder if it is a fault with theirs.

I also agree with the OP, in that I don't always have music on in the car (so that's at least 2 of us!), so it would annoy me too if it automatically turned on at restart even if it had been muted before.

My MMI remains muted on ignition cycle also, 2017 vehicle with MIB2 High running 1329 firmware.

maybe a firmware update will help his cause. What’s new in the 1329? Noticed mine recently has issues with carplay when I answer my phone it doesn’t come through the speakers and similar with music now and again plays through the phone speakers.
To be honest is it that much hardship to turn the knob or press the knob when you get in your car?

3rd parties are not supplied with release notes as such, we find out "bits" of information by referencing TPI's as and when we are researching issues, so am not sure of the full detail.

That doesn't work for me mate. That IS the issue. If I mute, turn off the car for more than 30 seconds (quick restart do maintain mute) then the radio or media will always come back on. It won't even hold minimum volume, its one about 3 notches or so and won't save any lower than that.

Correct. Glad I'm not the only one, was beginning to think I was odd for not always having the music going...

I just checked and am running 1326 firmware. Will see about getting it updated (I assume I can't do this myself?). Hopefully it will correct the issue. Thanks for you input.

Actually my bad, I’m running / the newest firmware is 1326. I keep getting MLBevoII and MQB (our vehicles) firmware.

Sorry I don't know what MLBevoII and MQB means mate :)

Hmm so its not a firmware issue I guess. I wonder if my MMI is dodgy? Yours music stays muted then?

Is there nothing in the MMI settings about start up volume?

I can't check mine at the moment, but I'm pretty sure my previous VW Golf had options for it coming on at either a certain volume level or previous volume level.

MQB is the given name of the platform our vehicles are based on. MLBevoII is A4/A5 etc

Edit: Yes, remains muted

I too dont listen to music that much in the car, and if anything its just the radio. I simply do what others have mentioned and turn it down manually on start up if I want it turned off. I dont press for mute I scroll it down, its never too high up anyway, but when I start the car its not that noticeable.

Anyway after having a play over the last few days mine also reverts to 3 levels up after a restart when the car has been left off for a while.

Is there nothing in the MMI settings about start up volume?
I cant see anything in the menu to set the default level.

Thanks for the lesson :)

Any chance this can be coded in to remain muted? I'm baffled yours stays muted on the same firmware. Could this be a "feature" on newer models?

Nothing else to be done then I guess. Thanks for the info @DJAlix

What an absolutely retarded "feature".

My S3 is a 2017 FL and definitely mutes when the volume control button/wheel is depressed and remains that way until pressed again, regardless of whether the ignition has been switched on or off. What is your vehicle year?

Have a 2017 A3 E-tron in for *** and HHA retrofits today, MMI remains muted between ignition cycles.

I've found a bunch of old threads of various Audis having the same complaint. Aparently on the older models there was a "secret" green menu where minimum volumes could be set, and that had to be enabled with VCDS.

@DJAlix or anyone else, do you know if the newer virtual cockpit MMI have a "green" menu or similar to make MMI adjustments?

If you have a virtual cockpit, you have a 2017 or newer vehicle and you should be able to mute as described. If not, something is haywire
