Tried to start up this morning and it wasnt successful.
All dash lights came on but on turning the key nothing happened - no cranking.
Started after quite a few attempts and has been alright since.
No cel, battery was new a few weeks ago.
Wheres best to start with this?

Mine was doing something similar. Very intermittent with starting. Especially in the colder weather. It was the solenoid on my starter motor. Ended up replacing with a new starter and cured the problem. Mine wouldn’t even let me jump start or anything. Then once it had warmed up in the sun It would start haha.

Cheers sam - what was the cost for a replacement starter motor fitted?

It was a couple of years ago now but think it was around £300-£350. 3 hours labour + new parts. Plenty of write up’s online but I was new to the car at the time and it’s a bit of a PITA job. Not much room to work etc.

Might be an idea to see if anyone near you with VCDS to locate the problem?

Check for the starter relay, usually there should be at least a clicking, check for build up on the contacts of the relay, rub down with a Dremel litely or sandpaper, otherwise a used starter from eBay.

I left the car parked for a month which killed the battery - I've not had a problem in the 5 weeks I've had the new battery, apart from its refusal to start yesterday.

It only seems to struggle on the first start of the day...

Cheers nhn- I'll try that.

Are the starters straightforward to replace?
