Hi, I have a chance to buy an Auto dimming rear view mirror from a B6 cabriolet,

I feel like a right peasant using the manual dimming wish i had auto dim lol

I have fitted autodim mirror as part of my auto lights/wipers, ch/lh retrofit. I do have a different windscreen fitted so can't be 100% but i believe the autodim mirror will fit straight on.

Working from memory here but I'm sure the coming home lights use the rain sensor not the mirror as a light sensor. The mirror has its own sensor in the front (facing the windscreen) but its a self contained unit and doesn't output the light signal.

I couldn't figure out whether the light sensor is in the mirror or rain sensor as i was covering the whole area on the windscreen whilst testing out my handy work, however, there is 2 sensors in the mirror, 1 facing forward (i thought to be an ambient light sensor for auto lights) and one pointing backwards into the cabin (i thought to pick up headlights from behind to dim the mirror)

Might be wrong though

The forward facing sensor in the mirror is a light sensor as the mirror only works in the dark but it doesn't output this signal.

Well if it doesn't work with my ch/lh lights, I still get a auto dimming mirror.
After some searching I found the B6 Auto dimming mirror fits an A4 B7 standard mirror mount.
So if you have a standard mirror like I have, it has the same mount.
To fit a B7 Auto dimming mirror you would have to change the windscreen, as the mount is different.
Why?, I don't really no why they did that, just makes it more difficult.

Not to put you off, but I looked into it for my 'Council Spec' car
Mine does have a sunroof, but no other wiring harness to connect to a mirror that I can find, and as you said, the windscreen would need swapping out etc., etc., so I haven't bothered.

I too feel like a right peasant using the manual mirror too!

The B6 Auto dimming mirror fits the B7 standard mirror mount, I have installed it and can confirm it fits.
I have uploaded some pics, the mirror has button to turn on/off an LED, front sensors, rear sensors and I think a light sensor.
The is a small gap between mirror cover and the headliner, but is ok for me and you can't see it from the outside,
I guess the B6 mirror mount is slightly higher.
The wire you can see is for my Dashcam, I have to relocate it since I changed the mirror.

Now the problem,
After searching to find an install guide I thought I had found on, but it was wrong
So now I have wired like this pin 1 from the mirror to a 15amp switch live, pin 2 mirror ground, the problem I have is the lighting,
I was going to put pin 6 mirror to pin 2 Interior light connector.
I read you an connect pin6 mirror to pin 1 interior light, but there is no pin of wire in pin 1 of the connector.

I read that if you put power and ground to the mirror and hold you finger over the rear sensor on the mirror, shine a light on the front sensor
The mirror should dim, but it doesn't??

I don't know about the wiring, but why would the mirror dim with light coming at it from the front?

I put my finger over the sensor on the back of the mirror, shone a light in the front sensor, but no dimming.
Maybe I need to cover the sensor on the mount ??

Got the dimming mirror working today, covered the sensor on the mount, finger over sensor back of mirror, shine a light in the front
sensor, it works, the mirror dims.
So I connected pin 1 mirror to fuse 31 15amp and ground in the front interior lighting, I spent some time trying to get pin 6 mirror connected
for lighting of the button when the lights are switched on, but didn't work so gave up, but then I find that when it gets dark and the mirror powered on, light the button comes on automatically
I am pleased with the result, see picture, sorry about my fingers.
So if you want a Auto dimming mirror in your B7 and have a standard mirror, you can fit one from a B6, the problem I had is finding a good
one that shows no wear on the button, why would you want to turn it off a anyway.

Might give this a go for my old bus as I also have a standard mirror at present.
Nice work Richard:thumbs up:.

Thanks Rob, I like it.
I was lucky that the guy selling still had the car so managed to get the mirror plug cut off the loom.
So what's next? I have to much time on my hands now !!
Still got my Audi rings LED front puddle lights to fit, I don't have puddle lights fitted so its door trim off , cutting and wiring.

If you need the wiring I have the door card looms etc from a set of s4 cards that had puddle and conv lights fitted if that's any help.

Hi Rob, yes that sounds great, the looms have all the plugs on I guess for puddle lights and red lights on the side of the door?
I would be interested, what do you want for them?

Yes they do have all the plugs Richard, no use to me as I've shelved that project now so just the postage or we can meet up.

rob

Hi Rob, looking for the red lights on the side of the door cards, I only have reflectors on mine,
I am only doing he front doors and I would be willing to meet up, maybe the same place we met before.

Ok thanks, I only need the Red lights and looms for the front, I have LED puddle lights to fit on the loom.
I can meet up when you are ready, just need to no when your free and buy you breakfast.
