When I was driving home form work I heard noise like something had fallen of the bottom of the car. When I get a place to stop oil was leaking form the gear box and seen a hole in the side of it. Could someone please tell me what should be here or what caused it to happen.
The car is 2010 a3 1.4 tfsi sport back.
Thanks

Do you have a pic from a bit further out.

Looks like something's pushed that hole out, which is the more worrying part.

Thank you for your help will try and get it to a garage tomorrow and see if they can find what punched a hole in it.

Something has escaped the gearbox and smashed the casing open. That's going to be expensive I'm sorry to say.

This forum never fails to amaze me. I have never seen or heard of that happening. Crazy

There must have been a constant grinding noise before it got to that stage, it looks like something metal has been constantly scoring away at that housing in order to make such a neat hole. I've only ever seen that happen once before, and that was on a differential on one of my RC cars.
Hope you can get it sorted without breaking the bank.

I'd be looking for a good used gearbox, get the gearbox code & there are plenty of VAG breakers out there.

Have left the car into a gearbox specialist today, he is going to let me know what caused the damage tomorrow when he get the gearbox out.

Totally agree, when my A4 developed a terminal oil leak from its gearbox at about 210K miles I just fitted a low-mileage replacement from a Passat (easy enough to find gearbox code from sticker in spare wheel well or service book) via eBay and sold the car 3 years later with a still-perfect gearbox .
I fear taking your old box apart sounds expensive .

You could easily spend loads of money repairing the old box, in fact it'd be difficult to tell how much until it was in bits.
By which time that used 'box could be installed & on the road again.

Did you ever get to the bottom of what caused yours ??

Did you manage to find out what the issue is? I have had gearbox oil leaking under my 09 1.4 TFSI only to look and see the exact same issue. The gearbox cap has a similar hole in it, though the car drives without issue.
