I placed a factory order for an A6 Avant Black Edition at the end of Sept 2019. A week or so later i was given a build date of Mon 6th Jan 2020.

Tracking the build progress online. the build was started last week on 2nd Jan and this morning the status is showing as 'in transit'. Not that I'm complaining, but is it really possible for Audi to assemble a car from start to finish in a week? I was expecting the Quality Control stage to take a t least a week! Or perhaps the the build was started in December and the online tracker is slightly out of date?

Cheers

Hi Psycho,

The build usually takes a week so that is correct as far as I know.

I believe the agreement that Audi has in place with the logistics company is to have the car from factory to dealership in one month, sometimes less but shouldn’t be more.

Thanks. Only reason I was slightly surprised was because my A4 B9 took around 3-4 weeks to get built in 2018...i think it spent around 1 week in QC stage alone. However, I understand the A4 and A6 are built in different German factories (Ingolstadt v Neckarsulm?) so perhaps that plays a part.
But like I said, I'm not complaining! :icon thumright:

or there was a problem with the A4 that needed fixing.

A few years ago, James May did a live programme (2 parts) from the Mini factory at Cowley where they were aiming to build a Mini in 24 hours. They actually failed by a few minutes but it shows how quickly a modern factory builds a car. I would be surprised if an A6 is actually on the assembly line for more than 2 days

Sometimes dealerships create builds on cars that might have similar specs to actual customer orders. For example the build date for my current car happened around the same time I placed my order thus I had the car in less time than others had...

There was a suggestion on another forum (TT - I think) that the build processes (paintshop, etc) on the tracker are the same of the week for everybody so unlikely to actually follow the actual build.

My recollection from when I was following the 'track you order' threads while mine was in build was that the transit times between the factory and the dealer varied considerably.
