Facelift S3 EPC LIGHT!

No need to apologise mate, happy to help. Do you know how frequent the oil changes have been? Might be worth sharing what was done at 40k, just in case.

I’m not on the oil changes mate, but at 40k the following was done;

Full major service including new ngk spark plugs, both diffs serviced, heldex serviced , dsg box service

Ok nothing there that would’ve be related to your issues. Infrequent oil changes can cause problem on timing chains, I’ve come across this on numerous VAG vehicles in particular.

For now all you can do is wait for the fault and symptoms to reappear.

Hi guys, thank you for your feedback on this.

I’ve just got home now after seeing the specialist. Plugged the car in on his diagnostic system and came up with the below code (pic below)
P001400

They said if the engine management light came on at the time the EPC light came on it would be something more serious. They reset it and ran the test again and nothing came up so could have been old?

Check all other components on the car and no error codes were shown.

Been told to keep an eye on it, if it happens again to bring back in but by using high octane fuel will only give smoother throttle response and wouldn’t have causes the issue I had.

That's what happened to me. EPC light on. Stuttered etc. Then next time it was EPC then engine management light. By then it was F***ed.

If I was you, knowing what I know now, I'd be looking to trade in and get something else before it happens again, and this time with the engine management light.

But, as others have said, it could be anything, and nothing to worry about.

As ZipZap01 states, there are many reasons for the EPC light to come on; many less serious than others and not necessarily engine about to go ‘bang’. Let’s not forget the coolant leak thermostat issue which can trigger EPC light too.

The code you got suggests an exhaust camshaft position error. That itself could be a one off, actual camshaft position error or one of the magnetic sensors failed. S3 chains are known to stretch by 60k and the magnetic sensor is a common failure too. Neither are engine killers or wallet breakers if dealt with promptly and fixed properly.

hopefully its nothing serious i would keep an eye out for similar fault codes hopefully you do not have my luck were the engine blew up at 9000 miles and did not even bring a single light on the dash !
