So really just a bit of what has been peoples experience. So I am not talking here about big brake kits or replacements from other models on the standard A4 B7 but fitting "performance" parts which are like for like. Be interested to know peoples views on if this is standard or not.

So short story had to replace front brakes last year for MOT so decided to spend a little more. Garage then refused to fit parts they hadn't bought (and due to family commitments/MOT couldn't wait) so stumped for some temporary standard replacements. Recently got the uprated parts fitted to the car. So pretty standard EBC USR Rotas and Red Stuff pads. Now ignoring if that is to your taste - had them put on the car.
So friendly local mechanic I got to fit them bled them 3 times he was so worried, and even when I picked them up he was unsure. I listened, took it out and I know you cannot push new discs/pads, but just lightly used them. TBH it was a little scary they really didn't feel great. At low speed in particular - the last 10mph felt like an age. At speed they felt a bit better. But it was really bad at braking, really bad.

Now you could feel a very regular concentric groove pattern on them at first when you ran your finger over the disc, hard to describe the exact feeling. Looked at the EBC site and they talk about skimming, etc but that really is pricey - but said wait first 1000 miles (as new pads and discs) and should be fine. So plenty of careful driving and now at a little under 1000 miles now and the brakes feel really good again if you push them hard. When you run your finger over them they are properly smooth as I would expect.

Is that normal for "performance" brakes? Will be honest driving the first 300 miles with the new pads and discs was more than a little scary. Be interested to know any experiences with any, not just EBC, standard brake replacements.

And to preempt the obvious - yes these where genuine parts from a very large UK retailer. Not ebay or otherwise jobs.

I’ve used MTEC and black diamond discs for the last 5+ years on 3 different cars (drilled and grooved) with a mix of pads from cheap Mintex/ Pagid and DS2500

I’ve never had an issue within brakes feeling crap out the box, first 50-100 miles go a tad easy until full bed it, but pretty much always had good brakes out the box. bleed then once a year with 5.1 fluid jobs a good’un

Changed my discs and pads all round for Pagid (and new Castrol brake fluid) a couple of years back and although the originals were not in good condition, the new ones didn't feel as good for about 300 miles. I've never experienced this sort of longish bedding-in before and assumed it must be some sort of Audi thing.

Did they have the red bedding in coating on the pads?

Your experience seems very unusual, the red bedding in coating is fierce and gives amazing braking feel that lasts a few hundred miles until it dulls off and then you continue to break the pads in.

then if everything is working correctly the surface stays flat and you can see the pad breaking the disc in gradually with a dull shading that will grow on the disc surface.

I’ve got reds on my s4 and they are good pads with minimal dust, I’ve run yellows on a couple of cars back in the day and a set of yellows are currently on the TT.

Why not try EBC pads, I had them on for a good while and they were excellent and i'm no captain slow either, good stopping performance, excellent wear qualities and very low dust.
I'll fish out the ones I used , they weren't the basic ones either.

He’s using EBC red stuff pads, they are kind of two up on the performance scale of the ultimax which are by in large their OE equivalent pad.

they are a ceramic pad, as I mentioned earlier, I have them on my S4 and they are fine with occasional hooning, I’ve had them hot a couple of times in Wales and the Pennines but to be fair I wasn’t running great fluid either, although I was definitely getting pad fade and they where starting to squeal, I’m quite heavy on brakes on the road due to obvious reasons though.

I’m sure I fitted ultimax once and was happy with them they would of been the first ultimax pads though as I’m talking a few years ago.

A very good standard pad is brembo pads, used a set on a C5 S6 up scotland for a 1200 mile trip with a days worth of convoy though the highlands, they where amazing for a standard pad, esp as I was with much faster cars like B7 rs’s and other modded Audi’s, I only had to back off a couple of times due to the brakes starting to lack feel .

I fitted OEM discs and 'standard' Brembo pads last year.
Braking performance is acceptable, but squeal like banshees when cold.

I reckon your the first person I’ve ever heard a negative review on Brembo braking products.

Merry Christmas :) Thanks for all the replies I hadn't noticed the alert. Thought it seemed a bit odd and opinions seen to agree.

Yeah they had the coating on but to be honest I don't think it would have been that noticeable as they were just so iffy. I really do suspect it was down more to the discs. I did all 4 discs as well. Tempted to buy a second set of red stuff pads just to put them on and prove it. Might do that.

On noise they seem pretty good to me. Not really heard any squealing but not gone mad yet. Dust is main reason I went for them and pretty pleased there.

They're not uprated, just OEM replacement pads.
After around 5K miles, I really haven't noticed any braking improvement in all honesty.

Well I guess it depends on what your asking of standard pads, they certainly won’t perform like a fast road/track pad.

if braking is really that bad and you’ve got genuine brembo pads, I’d suggest looking into other avenues with your braking system.

It’s not like you’ve fitted cheap pads, brembo are a massive company that make mainly performance braking systems for most manufacturers, fitting OEM discs also means it really shouldn’t be those either.

What I mean is that they're not any better or worse than OEM parts.

I would expect better performance if I'd bought performance parts though!

A mate of mine fitted brembo pads and discs to his type r (think so he could tell people he had brembos lol) and honestly it was terrible he changed to the recommended pagid discs and pbs pads within a month (setup from the cup cars) and it was an unbelievable change.

Basically from what ive experienced brembo are very overpriced compared to some of the competition putting out top class pads and big brake kits.
