I've owned this car for about 2 weeks. Its had an intermittent issue where it would starts but then grind and conk out. Now it wont start at all.

Heres the video. (Side note: the headlights would sometimes 'flicker" slightly like a fire light but no battery or engine warning lights would come on". Also I've changed to spark plugs and coil packs due to a seperate issue.

Heres the video:

Cam belt or chain broke?
I’m not familiar with 1.4’s so it’s a wild guess.

Pretty sure the 1.4TFSI has a chain cam drive. Difficult to tell from the video but it doesn't sound healthy. I'd not try to start it until you have a proper diagnosis.

yes it is chain driven, had the AA come out and said its the engine not getting enough fuel and the battery was weak. and the grinding noise is the flywheel being span out. he got it started by giving it alot of revs. got a new battery and fuel filter fitted (pressure in fuel system is ok), yet to test on cold start.

AA Report:
Vehicle struggles to start from cold, cranks starts briefly but spins out. Will start with little pressure on accelerator . Charge rate tested good 14.2 volts, battery test found battery to be weak and advised replacement. Advised fuel filter replacement if not had recently to help aid starting from cold. Advise compression checks . Vehicle starts well warm. Advise vehicle taken for further inspection .

Just tried a cold start, similiar problem still persists after fuel filter and battery change.....

think its time for an indy

Video of the issue tonight. Starts fine if I rev it. No grindining noise anymore. Just cuts out

That could be an immobiliser issue, try your spare key first.

spare key works fine,

had it VCDS scanned by a buddy and this is what came up.

Coilpacks, spark plugs are usual culprits, the speed sensor is an issue that needs fixing too.

hey, thanks for the reply,

thing is, ive had the coil packs and plugs changed a month ago.
the car starts fine when warm only when left sitting over night, i have to give it revs to get it started.
also im experiencing a very LOW mpg. could this all be linked?

no engine light but VCDS still shows the cam and engine speed sensor fault after the clear.

would it just need a new cam and/or engine speed sensor? or could it be linked to a more serious isses? as it drives absolutley spot on with full power.

just had a cold start and starting moving straight away, engine light came on with eratic idles and throwing P0016 (cam crank correlation) same as VCDS scan, would replacing the two sensors fix it? the engine runs smoothly once warmed up, no sign of it being out of timing....
